A military roleplay.

Discussion in 'Discussion' started by Canoness, Oct 11, 2015.

  1. Me and Rhenz were talking about a possible creation of a military roleplay. I want it to be aimed towards a small-medium sized crowd of players and not something SCG sized for the sake of RP and simplicity. I was thinking a take on something like Insurgency's story for example, Iraq War or something in the middle east. For political reasons though if we ever did do something like that it'd be contractors and not something like U.S. army vs ISIS etc. Feel free to pitch in ideas.

  2. I think a really interesting scenario would be UN Peacekeepers doing their job in a destabilized African country.

  4. It usually ends up getting tedious and boring because noone can roleplay an American soldier at that time correctly.

I was originally thinking national problems which turns into a civil war, with states declaring independence and what not. Obviously other nations may help out, and that would be interesting, however, with a small/medium population, a civil war like states v government or whatever would be much more feasible.

I'll probably have too much on my plate in the coming weeks to even consider doing this, anyway.

Too many have been attempted and too many have failed. Even I have succumb to the failure of a Military-style RP.

  9. That's an accurate representation actually and it's why I despise Vietnam war RP.

I think though that a lot of people stereotype the military as what Dovahneer said, shooting one guy then living in horror for the rest of your days while in reality it probably affects one out of 100 soldiers for example. Not every person who joins the military is 100% sensitive either.

As for Vexus's statement the reason why most fail is because of crappy events, planning and it does honestly get boring after a bit if it's done over and over, you need variety.

an idea can never fail, it's the way that it's created and maintained by the owners that makes it utterly shit.
unless you're literally doing like white suburbrp.

Could probably do the Rhodesian Bush War, plenty of small operations against a variety of OPFORs.

    Seriously.

UN Peacekeepers don't do shit. They didn't do anything in Rwanda when jeeps full of gun-toting rebels rolled up. They just pulled out.

Probably one of the reasons why it would have to be a fictional conflict.

  17. Fictional conflicts are much easier to work with because you don't have people breathing down your necks with things like "THAT NEVER HAPPENED", plus I meant it from a passive aspect, not an action one. Like socializing with the locals of the land, and how you would probably be hated for being foreign.

I once had the idea of this mish-mash of thoughts in relation of how one might make a server with a roleplay setting during the Vietnam War without having to abide by rankings and other large technicalities.

I think I gave it some sort of name. It was based off a fictional idea of a wealthy child being drafted into the war, who slowly grew rather mentally ill and had sadistic tendencies which quickly resulted to him dishonorably discharged and sent back to the United States. Pissed off and lusting for blood and more war, he created a small company that did touring and 'exotic game hunting' with lengthy contracts that more or less forced people to stay at their destination, saying they'd follow all of the requests and orders of the tour guide, et-cetera--all for dirt cheap prices. The previously discharged tour guide somehow manages to smuggle in these people by flying them into Vietnam and has them stay in a horribly and quickly constructed lodge-like area that is more like an outpost, and has them go on 'group hunts' whether they like it or not, perhaps as his own personal army. I wanted to toss in elements similar to that of Battlefield: Bad Company's 'action and comedy' feel to it, but I also wanted give that sense of a very real situation going on around them. One that might make people terrified to go to sleep at night, as nobody has truly gone to combat before.

Bingo. That's the problem with military roleplay and servers trying to re-enact things. People have absolutely zero idea what training is actually like, how long it takes, and even if they did, they'd be smart to realize that it's impossible to cram all those weeks into training and expect your server to be populated.

Let's be fair, though. I've been admin on at least all of Shazzy's military roleplay servers, and I can say one thing's for sure: It's hard to be original.

Either people want US vs China or they want Bosnia vs Serbia. Either people are historical, or they just want the modern action.

I've always thought of the idea of having British Army or Royal Marines in the Congo. There could be the war on blood diamonds, African warlords, and proper Yorkshire accents, innit?

  20. There's also the fact that noone roleplays an insurgent or soldier right either. People think it's like "HELL YEAH LET'S SHOOT THESE BROWN SKINS NAPAAAAAAALM" - but never actually roleplay /reacting/ to the horrors of war. It's what pisses me off about SCG's CMRP - the complete lack of empathy in actions. People shoot first and ask questions later. I've also seen in MULTIPLE military roleplays featuring the US Armed Forces where the whole company/battalion would take part in completely disregarding law (such as shooting someone they could've detained, and normally that would be fine; it happens, but not on such a large scale. And noone ever actually develops their character with the sense of regret of actually taking a life).
