    Sheeplie Hi.

Aphelion is a community founded by myself and Kenny in May of 2015. Our main goal was to simply create a place where we could roleplay.

We’re not going to try to pass ourselves off as some sort of “savior of HL2RP”. Our only goal is to create quality roleplay as best we can. Our main focus is citizen roleplay. We encourage citizens to break out of the current standard servers are set to. We will not have any sort of “Resistance” that is backed by administrators - their goal to “take down the Combine” and keep all of the citizens out of their secret base.

Monkah once asked me, “What does Half-Life 2 Revolve around?”
I was a newbie at the time, so I wasn’t quite sure- but eventually- I said it: The citizens.
“Bingo,” he said, “If you just treat the citizen faction as a slop-bucket for all your minges who don’t have whitelists, then you won’t have anything good.”

His words stuck with me, and now after many more months of roleplay experience, we have finally figured out what we believe is the way to do citizen roleplay correctly.

Citizen roleplay on Aphelion revolves around your interactions with other players, as it does on many servers. Going in without the proper attitude won’t help you in the slightest. We see all too many players join servers we’ve hosted in the past, walking around the plaza - not bothering to roleplay with other players that they see. At Aphelion, we encourage players to take initiative. As a citizen, you can do practically anything. You’re encouraged to save money from your rations to purchase a business permit and buy a shop. You can then purchase goods and sell them to citizens. Maybe the city is suffering low output from the local factories. You could help solve that by applying for a factory manager position. There are countless things you can do as a citizen if you be creative and break away from the standard of “trying to join the rebels”.

Aphelion features a group known as the Citizen Proletariat Party. This is not a rebrand of the Civil Worker’s Union, however. The Citizen Proletariat Party is a group dedicated to supporting the Universal Union and making the lives of citizens better in whatever way they can. They attempt to hand out extra food to citizens, clean up the trash in the streets, negotiate with the Metropolice Force for better work contracts, and similar things. It’s up to the player to pitch ideas to the manager of the party. The party is also tasked with posting the city’s news bulletins. Their headquarters building contains offices where citizens can be hired to report on local happenings around the city- usually with combine-supportive ideology thrown in.

Currency here takes place in the form of ration stamps. These aren’t actually redeemed for rations, they’re included inside of them and are used for exchange for items from local vendors around the city.

The Metropolice Force layout is simple. The ranks are i5 through i1, with the rank of Elite Protection Unit above that. The only rank higher than EpU is the Commander, or CmD. The Commander is rarely played and only online when needed. The Metropolice Force on Aphelion is simple - there is not a lot of regulation involved with how the units operate. The punishments they can hand out are almost completely discretionary. By this, we mean that units are encouraged to take punishments and be a bit more creative with them. There are no “cycles” or “detainments”. A punishment for a crime could range from being tied to a chair and beaten senseless to being locked in a filthy room and forced to clean it. Conversations between units are encouraged to develop a personality for their unit that is more than a “yes man”.

On Aphelion, there is no ‘slums’ or zone where the Metropolice Force cannot patrol. Every district is completely open for both patrolling and for citizens to hang about in. There will never be a point on Aphelion where a bunch of rebels will be able to hang out unharmed in the open on the basis of “it being too dangerous”.

All in all, the server is focused on citizen roleplay more than anything. We actively encourage our players to be creative and talk to the administrators about new things that they could do on their characters. As players, we believe they are the most important part of our server and it is our intention to listen to them as best we can.

Knowing how toxic words and reputations can spread on cloud sixteen, we ask that you take any complaints or problems to our website rather than this thread so that we can verify their legitimacy. This is to prevent this thread from becoming a rant area where scenarios are twisted to make the community look bad.

Aphelion Half-Life 2 roleplay will be up when we feel we are ready. We are using rp_industrial17 for our map. Contact Sheeplie or Kenny for any questions or concerns.

  4. Hello,
Highly interested in the concept, would you like for me to hop on sometime in the afternoon to decorate your server map?

Im not apart of the server, but I would believe that over decorating the map would cause lag, I have seen maps with loads of detail that never get any players because of the lag, so yeah.

  7. I can answer each of your questions.
    • To become a 'rebel', you must put in an actual effort. By this, we mean you have to think about what you're doing and plan things out accordingly to be successful. The MPF is not known for their lenience when it comes to people to resist and the administration will not be handing out free passes for people to NLR. I can't exactly say how much harder it would be than other servers to become a 'rebel', since that is mostly up to the roleplay ability of the player. The Civil Protection do not pull their punches.
    • The content pack can be found here: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=440627365
    • The roleplaying standard that we're aiming for is moderately high, i'd say. However, we're not going to make the server some sort of 'elite club' where new roleplayers are shuffled away into groups so they don't bother anybody. Everyone is given equal opportunities to roleplay to the best of their ability.
    • Yes, we will be including clothes from our HL2TS2 re-skin pack that can be found in our content. It removes a lot of the "lambda" symbols from the clothing and armbands that we found annoying to deal with. We have a crafting system in place and plenty of custom items. However, the most recent update to Clockwork made the crafting plugin incompatible. We're working on fixing that.
    • The map is quite decorated, but not so decorated that it causes lag. We are running the most updated version of Clockwork that has been smoothed out quite a bit.
I hope that I answered your questions. If you have any more, feel free to add me on steam.

  8. So how's the standard PK?
Can I run a mafia-like business as a grotto owner and pay off a corrupt cop to "put out" my competitors?

    Sounds fun.

Also, why would you run GMOD on Win Vista?

  9. The PK rule is if you endanger your character's life, you get PK'd. If you're willing to roleplay a mafia-like business properly - you can. You just have to put in the effort.

10/10 server, no joke. I recommend this.
Snuck into the Nexus and pushed multiple buttons before getting caught by the CmD. He was out of bullets so I made a B-line for the pod for my grand escape, but I got cornered and got amputated.

    Sheeplie Hi.

Thanks for the positive feedback guys, things are coming along great- the business menu has been completed and set up to our liking.

If you're interested in joining Civil Protection, you can do that on our forums early for day one recruitment.
