HL2RP Apoapsis HL2RP

Discussion in 'Communities' started by emperorcool233, Oct 3, 2016.

  1. There have been some "slight" changes done in an attempt to attract people.

    Overview

    Hello, people of C16!

Apoapsis HL2RP (formerly No-Nonsense HL2RP) aims to take the old values of city HL2RP and refrain from “breathing new life” into it or changing it around to appear novel and new - no, we aim to take the basics and do them right.

We focus on interpersonal relationships and player-made, naturally forming stories rather than a large overarching plot to force everyone into a pre-decided railroaded turn of events. The setting provides many freedoms for not only citizens, but CCA and rebels as well, allowing you to form relationships without being forced to abandon them because the Combine doesn’t like it, or because everyone gets magically brainwashed by unknown machines.

To promote this not only will we loosen up the generic rules of city RP (running no longer will get you stopped, walled and stunsticked!) but we will also redefine rebels and rebellious activities in general. They will not be people who hide out in the sewers all day and come out only to ambush recruits, or vested and armed men with no names.

Rebels will now be as one friend of ours put it, “an uneasy balance between Colombian drug lords and Che Guevara/militant liberator wanna-bes”. Being a rebel should not mean having a gun and shooting it often - it should mean hiding away from the Combine and putting up anti-UU posters just to have a little more now-illegal luxury in your life. MP3 players, recreational drugs and derogatory jokes about the Union will replace 9mm pistols and heavy kevlar vests, or so we hope.

    Setting

You are in City 18, a newly-founded city taken over and retrofitted by the Combine when faced with overcrowding issues in other cities. The CCA is barren, rebel presence is nearly null, and the streets lay empty, littered with trash that’s likely been there a long time. Empty shops line the streets, begging to be re-opened, and all those lights shining down on you remain unmanned for the time being.

Your transfer here was a blessing. While the CCA won’t allow anything to go on under their sight, as usual, the amount of unwatched spots and abandoned stores and bars are perfect for that little deep chat you’ve needed for a long time.

The world isn’t quite your oyster, and any blatant rebellious or violent activities will most definitely bring the long arm of the universal law down on you, but something tells you life is at least going to be a little more interesting here, now that you can chat with your neighbor and skip the usual beatings of talking above whisper-level.

    Factions

    Citizens
    [IMG]

Citizens normally would of course perhaps be the most important part of HL2RP, but here they are just another medium for our goal - for everyone to be involved in a deep web of connections and friends all looking for the same thing, a better life, or as good as it can get. Typical daily activities include but are not limited to; chatting with your friends at the local cafe, contemplating throwing a can at that officer, writing, reading what others have written, or just wasting time throwing dice for a can of boiled water.

You might try to figure out how to cook a headcrab your friend caught the other day, or seeing if you can hassle some tokens off of an officer with an offer of the “best boot-shine you’ve seen, officer”.

With most of the CCA being fellow citizens like you, drafted in mere days ago to fill the ranks, severe punishments might not be handed out too much, and blind-eyes will be turned as long as you cough up a small bribe. Or at least that's how it seemed, until the troops from other cities started pouring in..

    Rebels
    [IMG]

Being classified a rebel will be tough here, given that the flow of vests, hardcore weaponry and existence of sekrit rebel base!!!s will be heavily restricted. We will allow trading, of course, but there has to be an admin source of items, and we won’t quite give up guns or vests to anyone who “crafts them out of scrap metal” or “makes them out of leather”.

Being a rebel on our server will mean trading in luxury foods, drugs, or hanging out in restricted areas - lying down on a restricted roof to get a better view of the stars, or growing tomatoes in your house and ending up having to give half to it to an officer so he’ll shut up, those all count as rebel activities here.

Not meaning you’ll get tossed in jail for days at a time for eating a tomato in public; just meaning you’ll have to do it sneakily, and certainly not in the original CCA’s sights. The drafted ones and even the experienced troops likely won’t care, though, and they might even join you for a contraband beer in the depths of the slums. After all, they were just like you one day - why would they gain a sense of duty for the people they likely used to hate?

    CCA
    [IMG]

Also known as the MPF, the Combine Civil Authority in C18 consists, now, somewhat of drafted units dragged right out of the trains and stuck in a suit. The few experienced units transferred from other cities are likely too busy training others to bother you, and even if YOU are CCA, well, they will likely gloss over you too in their frantic attempts at properly training every new recruit.

Nearly everyone around you is just as inexperienced and fresh as you, and likely still citizens, maybe even a bit rebellious, in spirit. Intuition tells you high command isn’t gonna be able to rule with an iron fist with so many new units around, and getting things from citizens seems much easier now that you don’t have to befriend them - you can just intimidate them.

On a more OOC level, the CCA will follow a different system from the usual.

Divisions/squads will mean less now, resembling more small sub-communities within the CCA. As a recruit you have seven days to impress a squad leader to join his squad. What they require is fully up to them - perhaps a bribe, or a certain attendance rate to his trainings. Once you are in a squad, your promotion to the basic Ground Troop (GT) will occur, and you're free to get sent on missions and do CCA-y things.

As of now due to low populace there is only one squad, UNION (abbreviated with the letter U in names) with no specialization. Different squads will continue to not have specializations, the only thing that changes is what leader you listen to. Everyone is considered a possible medic, or marksman, or an engineer, and the only way to get equipment to help you be one of those is to ask your divisional.

Medics or engineers and the likes will be distinct from others by common knowledge and their skills, not by a division or an armband clearly showing what they are, making for a more personal CCA experience where you know you can rely on that unit for medical aid because he patched someone in your squad up three days ago - not because HELIX stands besides his rank.

    Oh and, voice commands?

    No.

    Features/Policies

We feature various quality-of-life plugins such as better viewdata, or the combine technology overlay to give a fresher look to the normally drab and cookie-cutter UI of HL2RP servers while keeping it familiar enough to navigate even if you’re coming from unmodified Clockwork.

!Cake anti-cheat keeps out the naughty few and a little-tolerance (not zero) policy ensures nobody gets away with rp-disrupting acts, be they OOC or just stupid IC decisions, too many times. Active and devoted admins won’t be slow to respond, and we do not have any slow, painful processes for getting almost-necessary flags or permissions, such as pet.

If it brings good roleplay for all, we likely will allow it, and even if we don't, you are free to discuss without fear of getting banned for disagreeing. The only way to net yourself large bans is by outright attempting to hack or being a blatantly obvious minge, at which point - well, you’re likely not here to stay a long time anyway.

We also attempt to do our fair share of lightning and prop work around, but keep in mind we can’t do too much of it or fill in every area with detail, mainly because we want others to customize whatever area they “claim”, so to speak, and because we’d like the server to be playable at a decent FPS even for the ones with less powerful computers.

Simple weather is in use and lights have been placed in some of the more important areas to prevent it from becoming too dark, but keep in mind, some darkness is meant to be.

    Info

Our forums are in the works, but as most things can be gained by asking and looking trustworthy, OOC apps do not matter much. There are also IC apps in full effect right now, especially with the OOC and IC drought of CCA and workers.

A quick word of warning: there seems to be a bug in place where you will download random files if you have your Gmod set to download all files upon connection. We have no FastDL in place, so we have no idea where this is from, but set it to "map files only" or off if you want to connect faster.

And remember - misery loves company.

Daohlocks The Bible is my favorite sci-fi novel.

A very well-done and refreshing thread.

I won't waste my time with criticism, because it's all good in my eyes.

Maybe I'll join to check it out, but nevertheless, good luck.

Agreed. This looks like a solid introduction!

  4. What I mostly love is how you're not acting like a professional, nor a student who wants to become an owner and "save" the game mode. This community seems lovely already due to your advertisement and I hope to check it out sometime. Good luck.

  5. If you call wanting good RP elitist, then yes, it is elitist pandering.

looks real nice my dude, but since I'm a csgo fag now i'll probably not get on
or maybe i will idk my mandudechumpal
maybe your server will get me into hl2rp again????

  9. I understand what you're trying to convey here and I do partly agree, actually. This server is of course meant to be different from what I consider to be a bad norm (it'd be weird if we wanted to be just like everyone else, wouldn't it?) but I may have taken it a bit too far. Thanks for your input, and if I ever have to write a text like this I'll keep in mind what you've said.

Considering this, I might check it out. Either way a decent thread.

  11. This looks pretty promising.

I have a question though, how will you exactly manage combine and citizen economy? Will a majority of goods come in smuggled or crafted or something else?

  12. We are currently thinking of adding in buyable bits and pieces to make weapons, clothing, et-cetera. Though, this has not been implemented as of yet, as both Emperor and I have been trying to learn coding to set up items. But, for now, we can do without guns. Considering we do only have a player base of two.

  13. Pick one.

Again, you're saying you're sticking to basic HL2RP, which would imply, due to the examples given in HL2 that the CCA would be brutal, so really you aren't sticking to 'No Nonsense', but rather to editing the gamemode substantially.

    *ejaculates*

Might be the next server I review, seems like it'll at least be interesting.

  14. I agree with that first bit partly, I did make it seem like I would literally be changing next to nothing about the lore and gamemode. What I really meant to say is that this won't be some triple-server colossus with a large rebel presence, or a completely re-made "beta" (what does beta RP even mean anyway?) version of city HL2RP. It'll be HL2RP, with citizens, CCA, CWU, slum-going small-time rebels. You know - good ol' CityRP.

However, the second part I must disagree with. Not one sentence before that bit I gave an explanation as to why the CCA on this server won't be brutal lore-wise, and while I can't guarantee some actually player-controlled units wont be a bit ruthless, in the lore itself (the thing that /might/ dictate how you RP in general depending on how extreme it is, in this server we aim for more freedom/less oppression) they are all softies because, well, they were drafted mere days ago.

  15. Alright, so.

I've taken a bit of a look around and about these forums and I've noticed you guys as a whole tend to enjoy nearly the opposite of what this server was first planned to stand for. And in some cases, I found myself agreeing.

This isn't a complaint, but a question - if I were to turn the server on its head and change things around to fit what I read, would that come across as just good ownership or try-hard pandering? See, I want to make a place people enjoy, and if this means changing a lot of policies - that's fine. But I don't want to look like I'm going to mold to everyone's wants instantly, be they good or bad.

    What do you guys think?

if your gut tells you to change it, change it. you shouldn't be trying to appeal to everyone here because we're only a tiny portion of the actual population of hl2rp. you're better off making it the best for everyone, and not just the people here. we tend to have very specific memories and think our ways were the best ways, but it all feeds off nostalgia.

do you, dude. don't let what you read change you. your shit could be the next big shit, so do you.
