ok i bought it.

I played Arma 2 but it felt kinda clunky and shit.

Arma 3 looks more friendly with the user interface and shit, but I want to get into the military sim itself.
what do I need to do and what do I need to have.

So I finally got a server setup with mods and shit, we've had tons of fun (myself and some friends). I thought about posting the stuff for joining here - anyone interested?

On a scale of Private to General on a MILSIM scale we're about a Corporal. We can be serious but we're not armchair generals.

 

I know this is a little offtopic but seeing as you are interested in these great military sims. I will recommend a few games that really enhance the experience of a military simulation fanatic.

The only thing I hate about realism units is that they tend to make war crimes and don't even try to refrain from it.

 

The only thing I hate about ArmA is that sometimes its buggy and sometimes we have to commit war crimes to not die.

Suicide bombers are a thing - insurgents are a thing. They're hard to see in a game. I can't see a weapon sticking out of a dudes shortpants. I can't see a bomb wrapped around his stomach. If I let people get too close, I have to shoot them. I've made the mistake not to too many times in this game.

That's why people commit war crimes in ArmA. If you don't want to commit war crimes - join the real army.

 

Lemme remind you that ArmA isn't the only game to feature realism units. There are others and they do respect war crimes and do at least speak upon the topic. Yours truly was once apart of a Panzergrenadier Unit for a game called Red Orchestra which had a mod called Darkest Hour to play as Americans and the Western Front line Germans. We clearly saw homes and objected to not use them unless the situation warranted it.Yet even if we did use a building we'd charge our unit with a war crime.
