What factors do you feel contribute most to a server's atmosphere and immersion?

I guess.. something that resembles HL2 as closely and realisticly as possible...

some echoy urban ambiance and decent fog can really make an idyllic sunny city map feel like a drab, concrete shithole

long ago i was on a HL2RP server and i RP'd taking a prop glass bottle, smashed it, took a shard and hid it under my sleeve so i could stab a CP in the neck, only for him to 180 and spray me down with his 9MM and call for backup all in the same action because he had 'neck kevlar'
another time i was a rebel and after a gunfight one of my buddies was shot in the leg and couldn't walk, i walked over to a radiator and broke off one of the pipes so he could use it as a walking stick
another time after that i was a civvy and had to hide some contraband (i cant remember what) during an apartment sweep so i cut open a hole in my sofa and hid it there since the fridge was too obvious and e v e r y o n e checks it

i.e lots of detailed props, anything can and most likely will be RP'd with so you should furnish your map that way

    A coherent story.
    Realistic characters.
A sense of difficulty, whether it's getting by or surviving a dangerous situation.
No bullshit in the LOOC or OOC, especially bogging down combat with arguments.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. Primarily bringing this up in discussion as I'd like to develop more plugins that assist server owners in achieving this.

You can't imagine how much I agree on that. Honestly, it's annoying as fuck to have to react to looc or ooc while rping just so the other person doesnt cry and spam /adminhelp.

i've been working on a combat roleplay system that mixes P2L and rolling to let numbers dictate the course of combat in order to minimise arguing. the primary reason people argue so much in LOOC when it comes to combat is that everyone has their own warped sense of reality when it comes to what's realistic and who should do what. most of the time it's just a competition to see who can type the fastest when engaging another character, so i kind of ported the dnd system into it (using 5E since it's the most balanced imo)

    you can read it here:
    https://docs.google.com/document/d/1MMgwQSLCynQC8c7FzqMa_mGiModoOI2jBqs7szzsPXs/edit?usp=sharing

i'll most likely be releasing the commands you need for this system as a plugin as i develop it further but there's something you could think about similarly implementing to reduce the arguments

This was already done by @5ym5 for a cyberpunk setting. His system can easily be changed to fit any other genre. I'd like to see if your system is as simple and easy to use as his.

that's cool, i'd like to see it if you have a link
none of the commands in this combat guide are setting/faction specific and all of the commands calculate things by themselves so nobody has to manually say "i rolled a 40 but according to the guide i get -20" or anything, since they go off of character attributes (you'll get a bonus to initiative rolls if you have high agility, bonus to firing guns if you have high guns, stuff like that) so i don't see why it won't be easy to use or implement in other things

I don't really like rolls because minges can just whore strength and then they will go attack and cp and they get a 97/100 and the cp gets 2/100.

This actually happened on a server im cp lead & admin on.

*** [English I Bald I Weak...] would attempt to kick the stick out of his hand
    [LOOC] Charles Vein: roll
    [OOC] Charles Vein: roll
** Charles Vein has rolled 97 out of 100.

That cp would be literally fucked if I was not behind the citizen and gunned him down.

A trained Civil Protection unit, armed with a stunstick and a 9mm, gets fucked by a simple, unarmed, starving citizen.

I would only use it if I decided to make a semi-serious roleplay server.

i thought about this in advance, the bonus to the rolls will be very small, with the points you get (if you 'whore' one specific attribute) you can only get up to a 30% bonus. this sounds broken, but in the real world if you only do one thing for ages then you'll naturally be good at that thing, but then you'll be absolutely useless at everything else.
also, that /me seems REALLY powergame-y.

Rolling and p2l are both stupid because of how fucking easy arguments start in OOC because of peoples giant fucking egos, which ruin the experience for everyone else on the server. I don't get why s2k isn't standard issue for events such as firefights and combat altogether.

all cohesive logic is thrown out the window and replaced with who's spent the most time playing FPS games, that's not roleplay, that's deathmatch.
that's true, but everyone thinks their version of P2L is the best P2L and everyone else's P2L sucks, if there was a standard guide for P2L then sure i'd wholeheartedly agree it's the best method, but when everybody's take on it is so different it causes more arguments than the system is intended to solve. i think rolling is personally the best method, especially when tied into P2L, because numbers dictate the outcome and you roleplay in accord to it, that's why people roll dice in DnD instead of just explaining how they kill things because "muh character has 10 years of training".

  18. Reading through it, the concept looked really over complicated.
Then again I've never been on a roll server.

Hoped it helped, while I don't see plugins necessarily as the meat of making a good server it sure does help with the small things.
