    BOREALIS GAMING
    A classical experience...
Borealis Gaming is a relatively new community formed back in the summer of 2014 as a small project. Eventually the goals of the community grew larger and greater than ever expected. Now, after multiple tries and spin-offs over the years, the community is back and aims to provide one thing and one thing only -- a classic Half-Life 2 Roleplay experience.

Borealis Gaming is attempting to revive the good old days of Half-Life 2 Roleplay, making it both veteran and newbie friendly. The server contains a minimum amount of addons, custom content and edited storyline. We have the essentials to a great serious roleplay experience. You need not read and understand an array of custom information, factions and canon. Anyone who has played Half-Life 2 can jump in and fit into the universe and the atmosphere with relative ease. Our administrators are ready to support anyone who is in need help and guidance through the basics of the Half-Life 2 Roleplay experience.
We do not aim to be a revolution, nor do we aim to become the biggest server in the Half-Life 2 Roleplay community. We seek to make a quality, atmospheric roleplay experience where the seriousness and fun aspects of the roleplay intersect. Not all may enjoy the classical, 'vanilla' like experience we base our values on. We still hope you may give us a chance. Atmosphere and a lasting experience far trump over gigabytes of custom content and a book full of custom canon. Thank you.

Our server setting is in the classical
City Eighteen, one of the most popular and well known maps of the Half-Life 2 Roleplay scene. This time, your visit is not just made of a bland and lacking atmosphere, rather a full showcase of the harsh Half-Life universe. You are given the chance to live and breathe the experience of a regular citizen, Civil Protection unit or more. You are not game hero Gordon Freeman, you are a somewhat realistic person morphed by your own decisions.
Our consensus for City Eighteen's location -- and one of few custom additions to the story -- is that it is in the former city of Thessaloniki, Greece. The former city is rarely mentioned, however, within the roleplay experience as it is nothing resembling its past any longer.

The canon of the server, as said before, is only very slightly changed and edited. All of our canon aims to be 100% lore friendly. We do not edit the core points of the Half-Life/Half-Life 2 storyline, rather we add on somewhat cosmetic details to give players optional background information and more. The only requirements for playing this server can be reached by playing through Half-Life 2 while watching for details. There is great information to refresh those not willing to do another playthrough on http://half-life.wikia.com.
The setting of the server is in the classical City Eighteen.

The story begins with the Black Mesa Incident at the Black Mesa Research Facility in New Mexico. During a classified test on an alienlike crystal, the Earth is put under siege by the unearthly hostile beings of the planet Xen. Portals are opened allowing swathes of creatures to flood the new world. The Earth is put under a state of crisis, and the famous scientist and 'hero' Gordon Freeman goes missing while fighting his way out of Black Mesa. A nuclear weapon destroys Black Mesa after US HECU soldiers move to exterminate the population, alien or not.

Years later, the Combine (a different alien species) take advantage of the portals to Earth. They were the ones who sent all the Xen creatures retreating to Xen (and eventually Earth). They decided to look towards the crisis below and defeat the broken nations of Earth. In only seven hours, floods of Combine soldiers would force the Earth to surrender in a devastating blow.
Dr. Wallace Breen, former administrator of Black Mesa and leader of the United Nations, would be selected to rule the new world as Earth's Administrator. He would become the puppet on the string, controlled by the Combine Advisor's (alienlike creatures) who would go on to rule the Earth long undisputed following the war.

City Seventeen remains the undisputed capital of the new Combine ruled Earth. As we do not want to conflict with the events created by Gordon Freeman, the server is set in 2016 (a year arguably set multiple years before the Uprising). Most or all of the Earth has been under the control of the Combine/Universal Union for at least a decade and therefore there are no major military threats towards the Combine military. The Lambda Resistance and various other resistance groups are still relatively young, and stick to the outlands or the canals for the most part to avoid total annihilation. The Metropolice Force (the organized 'policing' unit of the Universal Union) have a relatively steady control over most of the cities in the world, including City Seventeen. This period of time is especially desperate as a result of these variables. Only a very small percentage of the world population can actually recognize freedom, despite those who can only dream to be free from the oppression of their occupiers.

The factions of our community are very important and essential to the environment of the server. We go towards a traditional take on the factions of Half-Life 2 Roleplay.
The Citizen faction of Half-Life 2 Roleplay is unarguably the most important and vital component to a successful roleplay environment. As a community we understand this. That is why we focus as much resources as possible to create an interesting and friendly environment that is citizen friendly. The citizens are, of course, the default faction and contain the most players on average. So much potential falls into the hands of the citizenry and the roleplay they create aided by our administrators who specialize in enhancing the environment.
As a citizen there are many opportunities to take in enhancing your experience. We have the common work table in the plaza which is the easiest possible way to find something to do. We do not focus on industry and keep away from the industrial section of the map for a reason, and as a result you will likely never become an industrial worker in this server. You may, however, join the Civil Workers' Union (a common opportunity). In the Workers' Union there are endless opportunities, ranging from street cleaning, to medical work, to business work and beyond. There are no such thing as loyalists or armbands, rather your character is simply better regarded by the higher ups and the Metropolice if you are in the Workers' Union or have high loyalist points. On top of this, the Workers' Union receives slightly better rations to fight the routine hunger among the citizen population.
As far as the resistance goes, as the previous sections stated we do not or allow any organized and powerful resistance, nor is there any Lambda in the city. Various groups do conspire in the shadows and meet, however you will rarely discover and organized military insurgency against the Combine within the city. We specifically hinder access to the slums as a result, although it is not 'impossible'. The rule of thumb for our server is that if you go into the slums/sewers, it will not be easy to get out unseen. Anyone who travels the sewers will obviously be wet, caked in dirt and other particles and will stand out if they attempt to travel out. We encourage players to invest in a more neutral citizen stance, however it would be wrong for us to prevent any opposition.

The Metropolice Force is, arguably, in a tie for second place in importance within the Half-Life 2 Roleplay setting. The Metropolice Force, also known as 'Civil Protection', is the policing force of the new world. They operate with a very light set of rules, of which its boundaries are far extended beyond what is 'needed'. In an almost traitorous turn, all of the enlisted Metropolice are formerly oppressed humans. It is unknown exactly what can drive a man to beat his own brothers and sisters, however it seems good food and a warm bed are enough to sway the opinion of a certain many. Some may say the world is now in a dog eat dog scenario (arguably in both real and make believe life). Whether any of the units feel good about what they do is disputed.
The Metropolice operate in all areas of the world, mostly in the most densely populated and important sectors. City Seventeen contains the most substantial amount of power in City Seventeen, much because it is Earth's Capital, although the Metropolice Headquarters is in City Eighteen. They are a power organization rather than a political organization. You will never see a unit involved in the political affairs of the higher ups. They follow orders, that is it. Although much of what they do is barbaric and uncivilized, in some ways many may see the Metropolice as an alternative to a fast tracked total annihilation of the human race.
The Metropolice of Borealis Gaming do have ranks and divisions, however much of what they do is the same in the field with minor specialties. No units are extensively brainwashed or augmented, however units are routinely taught to believe in the cause (whether this makes a difference is unknown).
Many players will wish to join this faction because it is considered more action oriented, however all must remember the importance of the Metropolice Force and how much impact they have on the environment and atmosphere of the server.

The Civil Workers' Union is again, arguably the second most important faction in the Half-Life 2 Roleplay setting. It may be considered a subsidiary of the Citizen faction, however the goals and atmosphere provided by the CWU is on a whole different level, whether of equal or more importance. The Civil Workers' Union of our server focuses mostly on the aspects of business, medicine and small work. Industrial aspects are less focused (as this takes place in i17 in the background). City Seventeen is less vital to the Universal Union than other cities as far as production. City Seventeen is more meant as a small idol or image of the new Earth, rather then the much darker picture of the other cities. The Workers' Union, regardless, attempts to make their best image and impact as possible within City Seventeen because of the image pushed by the Combine.
The Workers' Union adds much needed flavor to the Half-Life roleplay experience, and allows players to go beyond a regular citizen without touching on the much larger Metropolice Force. As a result, this and various minor citizen opportunities are the only factions joined through IC and OOC applications.

Please take a look at the other factions that are less important or centralized.

The Overwatch faction is another touchy subject along with the resistance. The Overwatch Transhuman Arm (OTA) is the main military force of the Combine, however they are only seen in large numbers in the non-city regions (canals somewhat, outlands, coasts, etc). When they are put in play within the server, they are for event purposes and are in small numbers aided by Metropolice in their operations. Overwatch characters are not allowed to be on unless called out and authorized.

The Vortigaunt faction is another very minor faction, however they add a slight bit of atmosphere as the common enslaved variant. They are frequently seen sweeping streets and buildings under watch by Metropolice. They are the most intelligent of the Xenian creatures that came during the Portal Storms, with the ability to speak and use telekinesis. All Vortigaunt's on our server are enslaved.

The City Administrator is a somewhat small background image of the city. They do not have much of an impact beyond relaying the commands of the Advisers and attempting to make themselves an imposing idol figure.
Art created by Sparky, aided by ideas from Lord Doge. Both are important leaders of Borealis Gaming.

Thank you for reading, we hope you consider Borealis Gaming as your new community.

The server is up and we are getting some players already! I also would like to note that previously the forums contained a manual approval filter. We have fixed the spam registration problem for the most part and users will no longer reach that roadblock (however the first post will require approval).

We have decided to switch over to City Eighteen after doing a vote. So far things have gone well. Sorry for the inconvenience - the thread has been updated accordingly.

Alright, see you around! Thank you everyone for getting the server going. We got a nice amount of players this week.
    UPDATE:
We decided to switch over to the UI.X original style instead of the former Xenith theme. It is much more user and eye friendly :p. There are multiple presets and a styler that will allow you to change the color scheme however you feel! We wont force an unappealing theme on you, just keeping it simple!

For those wondering why the map is no longer City Eighteen, it is because we are currently doing a two day long event as a result of an exogen/necrotic breach within City Eighteen. The population has been relocated to a refugee camp outside the city.

Event is over. Valuable lessons were learned in the time we hosted it. We are back to the classic old City Eighteen roleplay, although we plan to do more events like this in the future! Thanks.
