City 38 Showcase Thread/Album

Discussion in 'Mapping' started by Xenoxia, Jan 13, 2016.

  1. So I've been designing a new HL2RP map for the past 2-3 months and I'd like to unveil it and get everyones opinions and such.
Here is a link to a imgur album I have created to showcasw the map- http://imgur.com/a/NzmRD

    New Images! 14-jan-16 : http://imgur.com/a/JUyR8

Some of the pictures may look odd (Specially the overview/nodraw areas as it removes certain props.)
The city is located within Kharkov, Ukraine.

    Whatcha think?

  2. Holy shit, that's fucking amazing.
I honestly hope you finish this, I love the whole architecture and mood the map

  3. It is finished ;p

Or rather, it's in a playable state until I figure out what to add onto it after playable feedback.

Edit - And then I realised I should have posted this into the mapping forum, silly me; could a mod perhaps move it?

    Wow, color me impressed.
Nice to see a HL2RP map that isn't all dreary.

  5. That's what I aimed to make, a more pleasing looking HL2RP map for a maybe more upper class city perhaps. Thanks :D

    Moved.

  7. Looks great.

Needs more decals and other small details, though-- I'd assume you're trying to get the main layout out of the way first.

  8. There's actually quite a few decals around, tbh I'm running out of entity data to do much else with ;(

  9. I couldn't make out what the nexus is supposed to be. Is it supposed to be anything at all or just a random mess of human/Combine architecture like most other nexus in HL2rp maps?

  10. I guess I'm going to have to change my city's name.

Anyways, it looks really nice! I really like to see variation in the selection of maps for HL2RP.

  11. The nexus is the one wing of the trainstation, filled with a renovated clothing shop (Storage room changed to armory, changing rooms changed to prison cells); and renovated office/parliament rooms.

I feel upset that you'd just call it a "Random mess" considerind I specifically built the nexus with conversion in mind; seeing as most other /actual/ "nexus's in HL2rp" maps are just combine walls or full concrete walls with no actual conversion like they are within HL2 itself. I based it closely around the nexus building before you enter the citadel in the HL2 campaign. (However the building looks nothing like it was based on as I actually have artist integrity yknow.)

  12. If you run out of decals, use overlays. Should last you.

EDIT: Also increase lightmap size on some of the floors where it's obvious:

  13. I havn't even touched the lightmap size and I don't really want to go any lower than its default because I don't want to bloat the maps filesize even more than it already is tbh, but I'll be a bit selective with it if I can.

When you've got a map that gets pretty huge, it's pretty hard to modify certain areas when it's done ;(

  14. What I mean by random mess is that there are basically Combine materials some places and human materials in others within a single room, probably a bit too much that I'd consider it to be a mess. The following is pretty much what I'd have in mind for a converted building in a HL2RP map, and in my thinking the images you showed don't match up with it too much.

Probably some design preference of mine; your map can still be good for other people with the current style.

Edit: Another example of Combine conversion. https://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=447560 Kinda as if the Combine placed stuff on top of the structure instead of fusing it together.

Looks similar to a map made by a dude called OzJackal.

  15. Yeah I guess I can understand what you mean, but I didn't want to overtly decorate the insides too much as I was saving my brushes for outside decoration; wish we had Source 2 so we could have a higher brush limit...

  16. Yeah. He was working on it in 2013, but he stopped after real life caught up to him. He handed me the VMF and the content and I've been working on it ever since. Sadly he didn't include the PSDs for all of the decals so I guess if i ever finish the map there'll be 2 city 38s.

not even sure if i'm going to keep working on it tbh

  17. I personally like the look of the nexus, It looks much better than the usual hunk of metal that destroys the scenery

  18. While I'm no mapper at all, I think you can easily save up on the brush limit by converting some decoration items into models. But yeah, Source 2 is being wasted on Dota 2 right now while the rest of the Source community gets the outdated tool.

Yeah, I could see why you wouldn't work on it.

I think that's the point of Combine architecture in hybrid buildings, just force their shit into buildings and make it work.

  19. I've already converted quite a lot of my detail brushes into models, it's why my entdata is at like 130%. Urgh... It's bad when you're at the end of the project and want to add more but you can't.

Edit: I think it's even worse when you KNOW you should be able to add more, because I'm getting a constant 300+ fps in pretty much every area of the map.

  20. You can always choose to reinvent your creation. There's nothing wrong with redesigning stuff if you're not happy with the current results.
