City 4 Development Thread - 2/18/2016

  1. [City 04 Development Thread]
    Hiya. I came up with an idea for a map, and then started making a map of the concept of the map (that sounds weird) while I was trapped in a car for six hours. I have no camera, therefore can not show you that bit. However, I have started minor development (nothing special) and plan to release it within whenever it gets done. I will update this thread with news whenever I get any.

    Concept
    City 4 is in Anchorage, in case you were wondering. Anchorage is a cold, watery city - similar to the ration packets handed out in the morning and evening. There is a planned out-of-city Citadel, and of course The Nexus. The Nexus, in the city, is planned to be a renovated prison atop a hill to the east. D4 is compromised of slums made of collapsed cliffs at the shoreline, where the sewer pours out of pipes that used to go to the ocean.

    Locations
    • Citadel
      The Citadel is an out-of-city base for the Combine. Fixated on the side of a mountain, it watches over the city, cold and silent. A single train is the only seen entrance to the Citadel, besides an air base to the north.
    • Nexus
      The Nexus is an in-city control center. Made of a rennovated prison, all the entrances are watched by spotlights from towers. Nightly, alarms sound and the prison is searched.
    • D4
      District Four lays in the cliffs and hobbles where the sea used to be. Crashed boats are makeshift homes, and the water floods on a routine which none know.

  2. This sounds pretty good, I'd love to see you progress on this idea.
    I'm assuming, there'd be a different type of climate change?(Unless, the Combine have done some shit to the O-Zone layer or something, and I might've missed that).
    Anyway, I like the idea of it being aligned near the coast, could bring some new chances of RP.

    I'd suggest not having a set-boat, or raft already there or in the distance that's usable, as It'd just attract people to constantly find a way to achieve that boat, I think It'd be better for people to rely off instinct and attempt to create a make-shift boat or something to float on.
     
  3. Yeah. I was considering train (there's already 2 planned trains for this map) but it wouldn't make sense. Either a raft, now, or some pipe that leads from a deeper part of the sewers to the island.

  6. Just wondering, will the playable area be really into the city or a little far out? Sounds like it'll be near the outskirts with the prison/nexus being a top a hill and the shoreline acting as the anti-civil area. As for feedback, I'm not exactly sure about the lighthouse island thing, as it's already been done in the Venice map; I encourage you to try to fit new concepts in your project.

    this sounds pretty cool. hope it comes out the way you want it to.
    i do have a suggestion for you: please don't have the same bland nexus every other map does. i loved the citadel map in hl2 and i'd love to see a renovated version of that as a nexus. im sure other people would like that a lot too.
     
  8. IMO it'd be best to have the nexus similar to the one in hl2 as a converted human building instead of a min-citadel.
     
  9. Is this a mix between Outland and City theme?
    Basing it on Coast.
     
  10. The playable area will be partially outskirts, and partially corporate. But yeah, mainly outskirts.
    I had no idea the lighthouse island thing had been done! I might make a tide-locked cave or something like that instead.

    The Nexus is going to be a renovated prison, and as Yukisa said, there was one similar to it in Coast. However, the Citadel is, naturally, going to be designed similar to the Citadel as seen in HL2. Massive hallways, that sort of thing. I'll try to use skybox trickery to keep the map size small, though!

    Yeah, I'd prefer the Nexus to be that. I'll save the Citadel for the Citadel.
    It'll be mainly city, but with a bit of Outlands involved, yeah.

  12. Updated with a few screenies. I keep scrapping my work because I'm not happy with it, which is why I'm making such little progress.
