Very nice! Although I worry the large amount of surfaces for a single prop may cause issues in the long run.

I rendered a picture of somethings I made in Blender, I used a tutorial, but it's good for learning.

Here is a sword blade model I made WITHOUT a tutorial and I got it working Garry's Mod.
This model is gonna have a hilt and the blade will be made to look cooler, but this is what I've got so far.

I also made a cup model, super duper high poly so it isn't possible to put into Source.

Anyways, thought I'd throw in what I've done in Blender, which is a free software.
And a question for Dan, can Substance Painter generate a UV map with all your textures already on it? I don't like having to hand paint textures, it's annoying.

  6. @Funky
I don't think you know how UV mapping works.

You have to manually map it out and stitch faces together. Substance Painter only exists for you to paint on to that UV Map. That't the purpose of the program.

Oh I know how UV mapping works, I'm wondering whether when you paint textures, it'll automatically paint the UV map and allow you to export it.
See I've gotten UV maps straight from Blender which I have to edit in Photoshop to get textures on them, but that doesn't always give me the best result.

  8. Well yes. Pretty much all painting programs do that (MARI etc.). You have the choice to paint directly on the model in a 3D workspace or directly onto the UV map imported.

Texture painting is the same as regular texturing, except you're 'painting' it

  9. I layout the UV's in Maya, Export the FBX model. Import the FBX in substance painter inwhich you can paint onto the model in the 3D window, or you can paint directly onto the UVs 2D. However it does not do the UV's for you if thats what you are asking. It gives you different materials and not just brushes which helps produce good realistic textures, fast. Unlike software like photoshop were you can only paint a flat diffuse. Substance painter can paint diffuse, normal and roughness all at the same time.
