Hey All, Technique here and I’d like to first of all thank you for taking the time to even open this thread. If you don’t have anything nice to say, or are going to be generally off-topic, please keep it to yourself.

We are a Half-Life 2 Roleplaying Community that has launched today, the 19th of January (AEST - GMT+10). We are a community that was founded by Myself, and Madness, and we go by the name of Dynasty-Gaming. We are currently running a Clockwork: HL2RP Server and it is running and ready for usage by a population of players (currently we are running 20 slots for the sake of seeing what we can muster, if we get a large population, we’ll be upgrading the server to allow more players on the server.) We are an Australian based Community, though we’ve been in the making since last year.

We have bright plans for the future, including:
    • Custom Map for the Community.
    • Custom Weapons + Sounds for the Community.
    • Custom Models for the Community.
    • And more.

Currently we have the following factions on the server, there may be plans for more in the future:
    • Metropolice Force.
    • Overwatch Transhuman Arms.
    • Civil Worker’s Union (Joined ICly)
    • Enslaved Vortigaunts.
    • Freed Vortigaunts.
    • And once an adequate population has been gathered, Heretics and Resistance.
    ______________________________________________________________________________

For people that are interested, this is the canon/lore that we are using, it is largely unmodified from standard lore, however, we are planning on doing events that will shape the future course of this ‘lore & canon’.

After the events of ‘Black Mesa’, portal storms riddled the vast landscape of Earth and numerous amounts of extra-terrestrial lifeforms - otherwise known as Aliens - were allowed passage onto Earth from another universe. These portal storms would eventually lead to Earth’s discovery by the Combine - a massive Empire that has conquered an unknown amount of Universes, the Combine, also go by the name of ‘The Universal Union’ - with the Earth’s location compromised, the Universal Union would make use of portal storms to launch and all out invasion on Earth.

Earth was so unprepared for an invasion from an external force, that the ‘battle’, the ‘war’, would only last a grand total of ‘Seven Hours’. Once the ‘seventh’ hour was struck, Earth’s defences would surrender to the Universal Union’s Might, and the Earth was officially surrendered to the UU by Wallace Breen, who would later be pronounced as ‘The Administrator of Earth’ and would rule from a 2.5 kilometre tall structure that is known as ‘The Citadel’ in City 17. However, the Citadel in City 17 wasn’t the only Citadel that was deployed to Earth, massive portal storms would open, much like the one in City 17, and the massive ‘Citadel’ structures would be driven into the ground with such force that their impacts would be felt like massive Earthquakes for many hundreds of Kilometres.

Earth would soon become ‘a barren wasteland’ like planet, numerous amounts of Extra-terrestrial lifeforms from ‘Xen’ would continue to grow and multiply in numbers, soon causing trouble for anyone that wasn’t located within the Cities. Few ‘places’ existed that weren’t under the Universal Union’s control, and even if they weren’t, the Union had a massive presence somewhere nearby, ready to make a move if anything happened. The Cities now played host to the remnants of Earth’s civilian population, 5.8 Billion People scattered throughout the globe, living in these Cities. ‘Citizens’ seemed to be treated like dirty filth, unworthy and uncivilised, however, many began to prove themselves as ‘helpful’ and would soon result in the creation of the ‘Civil Worker’s Union’ with the blessings of Doctor Wallace Breen and the Newly Created Metropolice Force.

The Universal, however, would soon turn its priorities to converting and using willing - and sometimes unwilling - ‘citizens’ for their own purposes, many destined to join ‘The Overwatch Transhuman Arms’ - Transhumanised Human Soldiers that are destined to serve the Universal Union until death. Doctor Wallace Breen made promises that Humanity will learn of the Universal Union’s ‘Good Plans’ for them and that the ‘Benefactors’ only wish to save Humanity from destroying itself.

Since the initial invasion in 2012, and the total occupation of Planet Earth in 2013, may environmental issues have become apparent, though some environmental/urban issues have also been erased completely by the occupation.

    • Decrease in Earth’s natural water and mineral supplies. (The Universal Union is melting down items and draining water. Evidence of drainage can be seen along the coast lines and old ports.)
    • Extinction of Native Species.
    • Decrease in Plant Life.
    • Chemicals/Pollutants from the Universal Union.
    • Lowered Population, beneficial as there is less human pollution.
    • Sickness/Disease/Violence has all been decreased significantly since the beginning of the occupation of Earth.

    ______________________________________________________________________________

    The Timeline of the Events
To further explain the lore in a more ‘simplified’ version, this timeline can help. It is also recommended that you’ve at least had ‘some’ experience with the lore of Half-Life 2.

The Resonance Cascade - During Half-Life
The Resonance Cascade was due to an experiment held in Black Mesa Research Facility (MERF - Mesa East Research Facility). It was an experience that went terribly wrong, and it resulted in the opening of a portal between two planets, between two universes, an opening between an Alien planet of Xen and Earth. This portal was massive in size and allowed Xen Lifeforms to escape and cause massive havoc upon the facility and the staff. After a series of events, a Black Operations Team was sent to destroy the facility, which was eventually destroyed by a Nuclear Weapon. The event was also known as the ‘Black Mesa Incident’ and also provided the Universal Union with the information and coordinates to launch an attack on Humanity, based on Planet Earth.

    The Seven Hour War - Between Half-Life & Half-Life 2 - Shortly after the events of Half-Life.
As Portal Storms now begin to open all over earth allowing for the spread of Xen Lifeforms, it caused people to move into Cities for protection from this Xen Threat. However, these Portal Storms attracted the attention of the Universal Union and shortly after the Nuclear Detonation at Black Mesa, the Universal Union would launch an all-out assault on Earth, using portal storms to deploy attack forces to the ground and allowed for Synth Air forces to also be deployed alongside these Assault Forces. In the time period of Seven Hours, the Universal Union was able to completely crush Earth’s defenders, and the Earth was officially surrendered to the Universal Union in New York City, the United Nations Building. Soon after, Doctor Wallace Breen, a former-researcher at Black Mesa, was elected as ‘The Administrator of Earth.’

The Universal Union’s Rise to Dominance - Before Half-Life 2
Soon after the invasion of Earth, the Universal Union quickly proved that they’d be there to stay and were capable of rapid colonisation, they established ‘Cities’ around Europe, Russia, Asia, Middle-East, Africa, The United States and Oceanic Regions. The survivors of the Seven Hour War were fed into these ‘Cities’ and were issued naval blue jumpsuits - which held references to which ‘City’ they belonged to - their very own CID Card (Citizen Identification Data Card) and a ration package - which contained a Can of ‘Breen’ Water (which secretly contained mind-altering chemicals.), 60 Universal Tokens to use, and ‘Citizen Supplements’ (A foul ‘substance’ that is jarred up and given to Citizens for consumption.) Soon after the initial invasion, ‘Citadels’ were deployed using ‘Super Portals’ and now the Universal Union truly had established its rule over the Earth.

    ______________________________________________________________________________

    The Factions
Universal Union: Domination is Key to Control
The Universal Union is a massive empire that spans across an unknown number of Universes. They are controlled, or appear to be controlled, by a race of grub-like creatures - simply known as the ‘Advisors’ - these creatures are capable of flight and have super-strong telekinesis abilities that they can utilize to stun, disorientate and even control those who pose a threat to them.

The Universal Union makes usage of the races that they have captured, and one such example is the Synth. Who have been heavily augmented into a part of the Universal Union’s war machine.

    City Administration:
"Welcome to City-... You have been chosen, or have chosen." - Random City Administrator

As soon as the Cities were established and Doctor Wallace Breen was announced as the ‘Administrator of Earth’ by the Universal Union’s Benefactors, there was a need for sector administrator, to hide away the actual fact that the cities were being run by the Advisors. With that in mind, the Union established the ‘City Administration’ project and selected Citizens of former political powers that had strong loyalties to the Universal Union. These Citizens were then given the rank of City Administrator and acted as the leading figures controlled by the Advisors of that given sector.

    Metropolice Force:
    "<:: Respond, Isolate, Inquire. ::>" - Dispatch

After the Universal Union’s invasion of Earth and the deployment of the Universal Union Citadels around the globe, citizens had been organised and placed into the cities that were occupied, it become apparent to the Benefactors and Breen that the cities would need some form of policing party to control crime and deal with the daily routine that the citizens were meant to go through. With that, Breen and the Benefactors of the Universal Union established the Metropolice Force in each city, under the command of a local figurehead, the Commander. In the last two years, the Metropolice Force has been fully integrated into the Universal Union, while they are used to watch over the Citizens of the Cities, they are never really seen, only in situations of uprisings, unrest and training.

    Overwatch Transhuman Arms:
    "<::
Attention all ground protection teams, autonomous judgment is now in effect. Sentencing is now discretionary. Code: AMPUTATE, ZERO, CONFIRM.
    ::>" - Dispatch
The Transhuman Arms of the Universal Union’s Overwatch Division, is considered to be the most frightening force that the Universal Union at their disposal. The Transhuman Arms are made up of Human Beings, who have been heavily augmented and operated upon to make them ‘born’ killing machines. They have no humanity, they do not feel happiness, sadness, or any other emotion. They do not fear death, and they will stop at nothing to ensure that their mission is completed. The Soldiers of the Overwatch are either conscripts or have chosen to join by choice. The Overwatch Transhuman Arms works hand-in-hand with the Universal Union’s Synth Division and display keen tactical strategies and plans

Xen: A Land of Mystery and The Lost.
Xen, a planet located within another universe, is home to multiple different species, who are under the control of Nihilanth. the Nihilanth is the controlling intelligence behind the Xen invasion of Earth. There are multiple species that make residence of Xen, and the most notable of the lot are as follows.

Vortigaunts, otherwise known by their taxonomic designation, ‘Xenotherium subservilia.’ Long before the events that occurred at Black Mesa, The Vortigaunts Homeworld was invaded by the very same Multi-Universe Empire that would later invade Earth. When the Black Mesa Incident occurred, the Vortigaunts leader, Nihilanth, saw the patrol that had been generated, he viewed it as a way to escape. With that, he ordered the Vortigaunts through to the otherside.

After the death of the Nihilanth at the hands of Gordon Freeman, the Vortigaunts chose to ally themselves with the human-led Resistance against the occupation of Earth. Though, not all Vortigaunts chose to side with the Resistance, some went their own ways.

    Enslaved (Vortigaunt):
"Cleaning is my duty, for now." - Enslaved Vortigaunt

Before and even after the Invasion of the Planet Earth, The Universal Union captured and enslaved Vortigaunts who were unlucky enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. These Captured Vortigaunts are processed and placed into Shackles that strip them of their connection to the strange and mysterious ‘Vortessence.’ The Universal Union makes use of these Vortigaunts, forcing them into cleaning the streets and buildings to keep them in top conditions for the Civilian Population. Most Enslaved Vortigaunts are treated with disrespect and are open to attack from Metropolice Officers whenever they feel it is just.

    Freed (Vortigaunt):
"We care little for the Union at this point in time, but our worry is the unification of the Kins..." - Grand Clan Chief Xyz'Utar

Those Vortigaunts who were lucky enough to escape the grasp of the Multi-Universal Empire, have now found themselves upon the Planet of Earth, living under constant threat of capture or death at the hands of the Union. Many Vortigaunts have settled into daily life on Earth. Though, some Vortigaunts have established clans, these clans sometimes compete for control of outlying areas away from the attention of the UU. The Freed Vortigaunts have access to the ‘Vortessense.’ A magic bond that they all share and which allows them to heal, attack and even generate powerful defences against the Universal Union. (Note: Most Vortigaunts are Docile.)

Citizens: Sometimes, I dream about cheese.
After the invasion of earth, the surviving populous were gathered and placed into cities all over the globe. Each was issued a navy blue jumpsuit and their own personal CID (City Identification Number) and some ‘water’ to ease the transfer. Now the surviving humans that were not chosen for Metropolice wander around the cities, aimless and with dreams crushed under the mighty foot of the Universal Union. It is these souls whose half lives are spent washing windows and performing various other activities set by the CPs.

    Civil Workers Union (CWU):
"We all would live a better life, if we joined the Civil Worker’s." - Gold Badge CWU Marcus Haycraft
The Civil Worker’s Union (Or CWU, for short) is a collective of citizens who have been deemed more loyal to the UU than others. The faction is supportive of the UU, and has been officially sanctioned. The CWU sometimes creates projects to improve the standard of life of ordinary citizens, such as stores and utility improvements. Though they do show kindness to regular citizens, their first loyalty lies towards the UU and all its child factions, this loyalty granting the members privileges in certain cities. Such special treatment includes being served first for rations, more in the ration packs and better housing assignments. They also get badges (Bronze, Silver and Gold), the type of said badge dictating your ranking in the faction.

Wow. Very nice job on the thread, @Technique. Your landing page is good too, though not so excited about that XF theme. Looks really nice, though. This is one of the few community threads where I've read the whole thing.

    Nice job and good luck.

  5. Pretty standard donation packages, I know, I was the one that drafted them, but they are subjected to change. (We have plans for an Arma 3 Server). We were thinking of rolling with the 'Dynasty' theme for the donation ranks. Peasants - Lowest. Knights - Respected. And Nobles - The Highest Ranked Status.

  7. It's just a title, obviously, but nonetheless. I can see where you're coming from, it was either Serf or Peasant. Serf being a labour/worker, peasants were considered higher than Serfs as they held up the economy by paying Taxes and providing food for everyone to eat.

  8. Dear god..

    I'm regretting looking...

    Everything else looks great,

Your XF theme is really bad,

Your donations make you come across as incredibly desperate.. It's not roleplay, it's pay 2 play in its current state.

    Selling whitelists is appalling.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers

  9. Like with all things, there are going to be flaws that are going to be worked out in the start. I can understand where people are coming from with the donations, and I'll be suggesting a change for them, ditch the sales of the whitelistings, and what not. We really don't want to come across as incredibly desperate, at all, not what we wanted, but I suppose that's how we'll look. Ironing out the bumps in the early days.

  10. Sorry for the XF theme. We had tech issue which I have fixed myself, and now it should be better.

  11. Zoo

    Zoo title

Why not do traditional noble titles, for example:
    Count
    Duke
    King

    OR

    Baron
    Count
    Duke

Anyways, you guys seem quite successful so far, and indeed, the website looks well-built and pretty.
I'll probably join one day or another, though time zone doesn't work well.

  12. Thanks for the ideas on Ranks, I hope to see you on the server sometime soon too.

  13. Meh.

    Good thread.

    Generifag Decent website.

    Good luck.

  14. What was the point of this? It honestly wasn't funny at all. Like, at all. It wasn't even necessary.

  15. The Dovahneer

The Dovahneer i can change my title

Anyone find this in the lore section?
It reminds me of shrek D4nk Meme$. The fuck?

Everything else except said donation benefits are looking good though.

I don't want to have Peasant title after spending 10$ on your community.

It's silly to give out MPF whitelists for money, CPs are something that represent your server and you don't want to have 10 years old with their mom's credit card to be the IC-rule enforcers. I can understand something like OTA or maybe even Vortigaunts, although I hate giving whitelists for money and have never done that myself.

Scanner unit isn't worth 10$, I don't think you will have much people buying "Noble" package.

Aside from that you have a nice community. Hope that helps.

  17. Money>Server

    It's always the case, sadly.
Every single server that comes up nowadays has 'donations' which are really just the entire purpose they're founded. 'Donations' aren't donations if you're donating to recieve something. That's a purchase, so don't label it 'donation', because theyre not doing it out of the good of their heart, they are doing it for benefits. They're not 'rewards' or 'perks', it's a sales tactic to earn money.
What they offer in these 'donation' packs is usually a good indication of the actual purpose the community came to existence.

It's a really horrible trend. It needs to die.

I'm not having a go at this community or whatever, but i'm just saying, this sort of stuff doesn't really sit well with a lot of people nowadays mostly because it's synonymous with low-quality, shitty darkRPeque servers with awful admins that want to make a quick buck, and i think that's pretty fair considering the history of servers the gmod community has been provided with over its lifetime in terms of HL2RP.

The forums look a little better, still a bit too cluster-f*** for me though. There doesn't appear to be much if any real content pre-created for this, and it comes across as a really quick overnight-community due to what feels like a lack of any real fore-thought or depth behind it. There's little to no guides, very little detail on most of the stuff you'd expect to see on most servers in terms of documentation.

Maybe that's just some ideas for things to work on, i dunno. Hope it helps :S

The sole thing i give you credit where it's due is a non-cancerous server titling; [IMG] and also not labeling yourself as 'serious' right off the bat.

Props to you on that one. Some of the stuff in the OP is a bit quirky and kinda joker-y or something, as someone pointed out. Unique in some way i suppose.

    Cheers.

  18. I can't remember Quantum-Gaming - under Revolver and Wraithh - being there so the sole purpose of money, for the sole purpose of collecting cash. Before their death, at the hands of a new owner, they had the very same Donation 'Packages', yet nobody complained, nobody seemed to remotely care when they 'donated', all the funds went towards the Forums/Server. But yes, maybe we should change our 'rewards', or strip them completely to bare-bone donations and no rewards, we don't expect anyone to remotely pay for a package, in fact, we don't mind if no one does.

As for the lacking of content on the Forums, that's my department and I'm sorry that it doesn't seem to adequately fit your 'standards' when it comes to opening a community. But hey, at least we're giving it a go, we're not all somewhat successful community owners, you've had your experiences with zDark, Gearbox-Gaming, GridHive and NovaBox, but we've only had experience with: Zephyr-Gaming - which was taken down because 'DDoS' attacks from an unknown source.

Please realise that not everyone is you, Fixxer, not everyone is going to 'live up' to your standards when it comes to Communities. What's important is the fact that we're trying, that we're wanting to have a Community. There are always kinks to fix up, always problems that will be solved, but it requires not only the administration, but the Community's playerbase as well.

However, I thank you, some ideas have popped into mind.

  19. Wouldn't somebody want to label their server as a serious roleplaying server? I don't understand why you'd give somebody props for that.

  20. Labeling it 'serious' can sometimes be seen as a 'non-serious' kind of thing, because you're promising something that might not always be the case. Why we didn't put it there, is because we want Serious RP, but we don't want to be stereotypical named community that gives false-promises. Because, like all places, there will be times when there is no Administrators on, no staff to make sure everything is serious, why make a false promise when it won't always be serious? Rhetorical question, it answers itself.
