    Can you really copyright a plugin on a game you didn't make though? Have they gone through the actual legal work to copyright something?

    its whether or not the other party wants to spend time and money to dispute it but yes you can

    anything you make can be copyrighted

    Like mentioned, yes, they can copyright a plugin and they have done so with many of them, if not all.

    You'll have to make do with CTO or make your own.

    Copyright is generally automatically granted - this is why many authors simply include a LICENSE.md in their code repositories to state what is permitted with their code without needing to apply via any formal process.
