Summary
Freedom4Gamers was founded in December, 2011 as a Zombie Panic! Source gaming community. We later launched a Half-Life 2 Roleplay server in late September the following year which remained public until we enforced a white-list. Freedom4Gamers is a non-profit and completely voluntary community, we never request activity from others and expect the same in return. As our name may suggest, we believe strongly in providing as much freedom to the player as possible, but will make sure to protect the freedom of other members. Freedom of speech and freedom of choice are both fundamental principles that we try our best to respect. On a less advertised tone, our community can be known to be authoritarian and xenophobic. We carefully select users, believing that having a small and selective player-base would create a much larger sense of belonging among our current members.

Filtering Process
Our filtering process is in place to protect our white-listed members and to keep our community a closed system. In order to play on our server, you must first submit an application. We have redesigned the application to have more flexible and general questions, we made the mistake before in focusing primarily on our canon and branding (you do not need to know our brand colours). Once and if the application is passed, the applicant is given connection information. In applicants, we typically look for 'down to earth' type of individuals, we simply just want to play the game. We are not here to provide an entitled service, none of us get paid and we proudly operate at a 'loss' to even further endorse this.

Roleplay

To clarify this straight away, we do not take roleplay seriously. We do not take any form of gaming seriously, but we will be mature about it (at least we should be). In our roleplay, we heavily emphasize the importance of character development, accuracy towards our canon and of course developing an on-going storyline. Due to this we see other features as secondary. Players are spending most of their time typing out performs or lines of dialogue instead of pressing buttons on a GUI. In other words, if one is looking for 'custom' plugins not-so-related to roleplay, we recommend that you look elsewhere (we are just one community out of plenty after all). Our canon itself deviates from the retail Half-Life 2's canon in some areas. It contains anti-sexual undertones and we really try to make the player feel isolated, insignificant and alien to their own world. We currently are developing the experience out in the Forbidden World (also known as the 'outlands'), but life in the city is somewhat of a more crowded and forced experience.

Small description of intended atmosphere:

Characters may awake to the pulsing of an alarm, one of which has been designed to induce a headache as it persists to sound somewhat similar to that of a wind turbine. The sound vibrates in one's ear as a mob outside protests the Civil Service forced labour commission. A metal grinding may be heard as a riot control steamroller slowly creeps towards the mob, each vehicle lined up horizontally across the street. Bones are crushed, flesh is torn, creating a sound almost like massive sheets of ice breaking apart. At the end of it, cleaners would grab a shovel and pry the mess from the street, disposing of the flattened waste in a nearby I.W.I (industrial waste incinerator). By the end of it, the rubber cheaply made hazard suit would stick to their flesh like a second skin, they would never see the light of day for the sky is covered by a blanket of musky green-tinted ash.

On off working hours, an ever growing anti-sexualist group marches and proclaims purity, declaring that sexuality is nothing more than the mind being raped and forced to have a will to reproduce. That the mind does not choose to have an orientation and in every single manner and form, sexuality is non-consensual. They dress in black, almost all are men, but none wear a cross around their neck. Then when one finally arrives to their housing unit, a humming is heard from their analog television, a pale expressionless face speaks in what one could describe as a neutral tone, the words cannot seem to be rejected.

A conscript had noticed that his wife had spent an abnormal amount of time in the shower that night. When she finally left the bathroom, she then would show him empty tablets, her bags are packed and both do not say a word to each other. She leaves to prevent hours of awkward ceiling staring. The conscript is but left to stare out his window at the hunched over green-suited conscripts that lumber across the street below, some hidden by a thick orange haze that seems to 'stick' to the air. As the telescreen had stopped its broadcast, a silence enters the room, the conscript is reminded of his solitude by the light high-pitch ringing in his ears. After the desolate observation of the street below, he returns to the shower and collapses against the tile wall, his tears feel warm as they trickle down his skin, he only wishes that someone was between his arms and chest. He eventually comes to what is left of his senses and reminds himself that like what happened to the seas, love had been drained from the world.

Unrelated Projects

Outside of our multiplayer projects, we have several singleplayer projects that are currently undergoing on and off development. Although most of them are undisclosed, I have been giving more exposure to one of them (screenshot above) which is based in a massive city constructed entirely of brutalist architecture. The entire style is inspired by the motion picture 'They Live'. The main character in the story struggles to find meaning inside of his overly sexualized society as he is both pursued and targeted by a massive social institution in charge of dealing with 'sexual inaction'. The 'Feel Happy Corporation' is the largest manufacturer of aphrodisiacs and antidepressants in the story and due to the dependence of drugs, has gained practically full control over the society. The corporation itself has gained only a monopoly of the City State of Euphoria, the rest of the world has been divided into several city states after an unknown catastrophe. The name of the project (which is a Half-Life 2: Episode 2 modification) is 'EUPHORIA'.

Usually I don't subject new people on a forum to being below me, but, are you serious.

 

This looks really nice, I might have a look at being whitelisted/whatever you call it.

 

I know GreenPepper over Steam, and to a personal level.

While I dislike the complete elitist setting they hold, I can understand for them to have something more controlled, rather than having another LP. (Godnoplease).

I'm heavily recommending this community, if you aren't shy from doing some paperwork, before being allowed in.

I find it mostly the same, but that may just be me. Being exclusive, means you're only allowing entry to some people of higher status, and who have common sense.

Question arises:

WHAT ABOUT SOVIET JESUS?!

 

Not like all of our members wear double-breasted suits and are forced to take regular urine tests to prevent any 'invalids' from getting within 'our ranks'.

Jokes aside, I would have to agree with your point about us being elitist (or 'exclusive'). Although we don't look for perfect genes in our members (and our members do vary in roleplay experience), we do certainly look for the ability to think critically and have a 'down to earth' sort of mindset. To summarize these points altogether, we just look for people who are in it for the roleplay and who just want to be an environment which I guess one could feel more at ease.

Of course this has its downsides, we most definitely do not get nearly as much traffic as the other communities would (which is why I recommend you look elsewhere first), our activity is generally low or very conservative at the most, and it can be pretty intimidating to newer members. Overall, I would never claim the community to be the 'Gattaca' of Half-Life 2 Roleplay, but I guess having a lock on our door helps.
