HL2RP Gamer's Republic HL2RP Pitch #1

Please note: The following is nothing more than a WIP idea and is not being guaranteed to be what the server will be upon opening. We are currently working on multiple possible story lines / lore for the final server.
I also apologize for the lack of imagery in this thread.

Also please don't kill me for the horrible logo, I didn't make it.

Welcome to Gamer's Republic's first HL2RP server pitch. Before we get underway I would like to thank the creative minds from C16 who aided me in the creative aspect of this pitch as creativity is far from one of my strengths

Skip the next two sections if you really don't care about it the community and just want to read about the server.

    Gamer's Republic: Who are we?
Gamer's Republic is an RP based GMOD community with dedicated staff that have over 4 years experience and are dedicated to one goal: Providing You the best experience we possibly can. I have always had one issue with our previous servers and that is not dedicating enough time to build up a set of good Serious-RP servers.
Although I have always pushed for Serious-RP on all our communities lets face it, its hard to get a functional server going when you are working with a player-base from mostly Dark-RP servers that is swamped with children who dont understand the concept of RDM or NLR, let alone Serious-RP.
So past attempts at World War 2 Occupation RP, City RP, and one HL2RP server have failed. One of the most key reasons that our HL2RP server in the past failed was a lack of a playerbase in the game-mode to begin with. If you go on the browser you will see only a small hand full of servers with a steady playerbase and the huge influx of boring vanilla HL2RP servers that dont forge their own identity is partially to blame for that, I for one am guilty of running my last server like this so I cant criticize them too much. This leads us to...

    Gamer's Republic: What's our mission?
With our next HL2RP server, we are dedicated to break free from the vanilla style servers that have ruined the game-mode for players who have played in the communities that once stood out and make their
experience exciting and captured what kind of RP can be achieved when HL2RP is done right.

    Server Pitch #1
    Multi-Segmented HL2RP

Our first idea for the server is to break it up into 2 or 3 different sections, each with its own plot and setting. It is also worth mentioning that we will not be remaining 100% canon to HL2, but wont be too drastically different. At the time of writing this post the only real canon breaks I can think of will be if humanoid combine will exist in the first two segments.
    Segment 1.A
One idea for the first part of the server we will be exploring the 7-hour war, and I'm going to strike down a question that spammed my first pitch of a 7-hour War-RP server: NO that doesn't mean it will only last for 7 hours. Just because its Serious-RP doesn't mean you NEED to be anal about every little detail.
The possible factions for this segment are:
    Civilians
    Military
    Combine Synths
    Xen lifeforms
    possibly Combine Soldiers
This segment will either be held on a regular city map like evocity (If we try going for something it being right at the beginning of the war) Or an apocalypse city map (If we try going for a more destructive end of the war type scenario)
This will probably be the most fast paced segment as it will rely the most on combat than other sections will.

    Segment 1.B/2
Depending on whether or not we start out with the previously mentioned segment this will either be the first segment or ICLY a few weeks after the first segment. OOCLY a few days to make the required changes and test before opening. This segment will take place after the war and revolve around
survivors of the war who escaped the city and are now hiding out in a small suburban town hiding from the combine while they make their way to a nearby city.
The possible factions are the same as the previous segment.
I would most likely be using the Aftermath map as it has a lot of open areas, as well as a militarized area for the combine to have set up a staging group for searching the area for the area for survivors, large open areas, and small suburban sections for survivors to camp out in.

    Segment 2/3
ICLY a week or so after the previous segment and again OOCLY a few days for editing and testing, this will be the final segment of the server and it will remain on this for the remainder of it's up-time. This segment will take place after our survivors have successfully entered the nearby city that the combine have occupied and are now using as a relocation area for humans who surrendered during the war. Now that the survivors have escaped the imminent threat of combine synths and soldiers chasing them down and are successfully integrated within the city, it is up to them what they will do next. Will they finally give up and accept their new rulers, swearing allegiance and loyalty to the Universal Union? Will they continue to fight their oppressors and band together to take back their homes? Or will they betray their own race and sign up with the Metro Police Force?
The factions used in this segment will basically be the same as most HL2RP city servers:
    Citizens
    Civil Worker's Union
    Conscripts?
    Metro Police Force
    Overwatch Transhuman Arm
    Administrator

The map for this section is pretty much in the air. City 17? Industrial 17? City 45? Probably will be voted on as the server draws closer to this segment.
I may decide to run this server on a whitelist only system to ensure quality RP, I haven't decided. Maybe only whitelist the first two segments? What do you guys think?
Anyway thats our first pitch for our HL2RP server, I hope you liked what you read. Please feel free to give any suggestions, tells us what you liked/didn't like. Constructive criticism is always welcome.

  2. You... You really shouldn't end on a HL2 City RP. Especially if you're going to do the 'fun' parts first. End on rebel base RP if you really wanna slow down to an end game in my opinion.

  3. Off-topic idea that I think would be cool if done successfully.
A white-listed standard HL2RP with the potential of an actual ending of overthrowing the local Union regime in the city. The server would go on until this happens, or after a set amount of time OOCly, maybe like a month or so. If your character dies you will be banned from the server until it is restarted once again. Of course the main problem with this is having enough players to fill it up, but imagine how intense it would be to only truly have one life, while still having the potential of successful resistance. You'd have to make the Union reasonable instead of the indestructible force that most servers make it as, mostly regarding OTA. Even white-listed characters like MPF units or City Administrators are not immune to the one life rule. Any high ranking character's deaths result in the slot becoming empty unless replaced with someone else, considering the original player would be banned. This would help aid in a successful resistance scenario.

  4. what if one guy goes and wipes the entire mpf force
    seems problematic

  5. I personally don't like this idea. Unless the server is restarted every day, or week (at the latest), I don't see this becoming something any player base would like. The idea that dying on the server means you are banned from said server really would discourage me as a player to invest any time onto it. Now if PK was enabled all the time (Like another server that was up roughly a month ago that Outro, zombo, gabs, cash, DETrooper, Pistol P, and Alyousha managed/created), then that's another story. I just think banning people should be kept for OOC reasons, not IC.

  7. If he does it successfully and legitimately somehow I don't see the problem with it.

I wouldn't want to play on server that DOESN'T always PK when you die, NLR is a fucking joke in seriousRP in my opinion. And it is an OOC reason, it would make people play more cautiously and really think about what they're doing. I think people would be more hesitant to kill others too because of it.

Making it clear: banning people because their character died will ensure YOUR server dies within one or two weeks. Don't. Do. This.

As for the city RP: don't. Like @MisurNutella said, it'll end badly. Nobody wants city RP anymore.

    Anyway, good luck with this.

  9. You're not really making anything clear, it hasn't been done before so you don't really know how it would work out. It's a very strong possibility, which I had stated before, and is why you'd need a ton of people playing to begin with. I know I'd play at least.

  10. Strange, I saw his name on the staffing list on the Begotten community thread. He must have just helped on the developing on it or bounced before launch.

Just because something hasn't been done doesn't mean people can't throw theories out. I'll state this again: I would not enjoy it as a player if I were banned for an In-Character reason (i.e. Death). I see PK as a reasonable way to enforce death. The only problem I see with PK though is people complain and complain, and complain... and complain, about their characters death because they "get attached". (Honestly I see this as selfish and kinda fucking stupid in most, if not all cases. Your character died, oh no, move on. It's part of the server story now, in the past, gone, goodbye, forever missed, never seen again, dead. Sure, it sucks, but there are literally millions of other characters you can make. Only reason I think PK shouldn't be active, is if it were a S2K event. If you die, rp a severe injury, and if you die because of said injury, or someone/you rp your death, then it's a PK).

  11. Throwing theories out is fine and I agree with him in that I think it is an extremely likely outcome, but he's making it sound as if it's fact when it isn't. I personally don't want to play HL2RP again because I think it's boring, but this is something that would draw myself in, likely because it's my own idea, but maybe there are others like myself that find it interesting. Even if they played up to their own death and then never played again, it's better than not playing at all in my opinion and I think it's be a fun experience.

I also completely agree with you on the fact that people need to suck up their own deaths, I understand the pain, I've been guilty of it myself, but not to the point where I let it interfere with roleplay. I've taken several loooong breaks from RPing because my character has died, but I accept it at the time. I had an outlands character that lived for like 2-3 years OOCly and I felt like that was too long, so I turned him into an OTA patrol and got him killed, I felt like shit but I also felt like it was the right thing to do. People will do anything to keep their characters alive and it's sad IMO.

  12. Daohlocks

Daohlocks The Bible is my favorite sci-fi novel.

It's common sense, but seeing as its actually very hard to understand, I'll explain.

Some people join a server. Said server will get, let's say, about fourty players. The server is set during the 7 Hour War.

If you didn't know, the 7 Hour War was, well, a freaking war. People die in wars. Lots of people.

So what if someone dies in the war, and they are banned from playing on the server again? They won't come back. And since it's whitelisted, people would presumably occupy those empty slots, right? Wrong. The roleplay community is so shallow that gathering ten players in a server for more than three hours is an honorable achievement. So what happens? The server doesn't get enough new players to offset their loss of players.

Tl;dr: server dies within a month at best because roleplayers that are dedicated enough to apply for whitelist servers are scarce.

Furthermore, if someone were to follow your suggestion, they'd have to make survival and combat extremely easy to make up for the fact that you'll get perma-banned if you die. It wouldn't be fun nor realistic in that case.

  13. I completely get where you're coming from but I wasn't imagining it to be in the 7HW period. I was just thinking of it as a standard city server setting with the possibility of an actual resistance end goal. Plus, the server would reset and unban everyone after the month or so to start over was my idea.

  14. To add a suggestion to your idea there, I believe that the "PK ban" should only apply to event scenarios.

Example: You are lolwebul #14, and there's an event going on. A Judgement waiver is called because lolwebul #8 shot at a cop and didn't kill him. The combine raid the restricted district, and you and a group of friends are unfortunate enough to cross the MPF deathsquad. A firefight ensues, and the MPF suffer a few casualties, and your entire group is wiped out. Everyone who would have died in the firefight would have there characters PK'ed, and banned until the event was over (or 3-5 hours, as that's how long events usually last for in good servers).

I'm gonna stop replying to this, as I think if it continues, this is going to be the only subject talked about on this thread.

  15. I haven't personally seen many deaths outside of events that weren't amputations so I don't think it would be that big of deal myself. I'm also going to stop after this and I hope this last post wasn't provocative enough to make you want to respond to it, that'd be really shitty of me.

  16. I do like the idea of the survivors setting up the foundations of what would soon become the lambda resistance movement. There are already maps out there like this (with ineu pass being one of the many options) that would seem good for this scenario. You could either do "group of survivors makes white forest base" or "group of survivors make small base which later branches out into lambda, and disappears before gordon shows up". Or, you can take those two ideas, and take the "lambda resistance" out of it, and have it be its own separate resistance group (which would later be destroyed if we want to keep to the canon as best as we can).

Pretty sure the rule is for WIP threads or unfinished threads. I've seen a lot of threads for WIP servers. If im wrong please correct me.

  20. W.I.P. server posts are allowed, to an extent. I would say that when you are confident with the project, and have began development on it(whether it be story and/or plugins), then you are able to post something about it. If, for some reason the project fails, your staff team bails, or the project over-all cannot be finished, either delete the thread, or request it to be closed until further notice. There are several communities out there that have done this. In-fact, a group of people who have gotten on the administration team on the forums have done this multiple times. I won't say community names, because that breaks one of the multitude of forum rules (http://forums.cloudsixteen.com/threads/new-members-and-community-shilling.27614/).

    Edit: I was browsing the rules, and saw this;
    1. Don't post your thread if it's not ready! If you post obviously unfinished or WIP threads, you will be banned.
    (Source: http://forums.cloudsixteen.com/threads/quality-standards-rules.8379/)
If I understand this correctly, it means that if your community is obviously a W.I.P., you will be bannneedd!!
I honestly don't know why this is here, but no one really follows it anymore. It was a rule made 3 years ago by someone who isn't on the staff team anymore. Unless someone on the current staff team says otherwise, I would say that this post is safe. In fact, if they say that this post isn't safe, and they warn you, I'd say they're hypocrites

Post-Edit: Now that I have read that rule a few times, I do think that it's specifically for threads, not communities. Still, I stand by my opinion above if this is not the case.
