    Hopefully our overviews gives you a quick idea of what we're all about, but for those of you who like more long winded introductions, here goes. Hello Buddy is a community founded by two old friends with plenty of experience running gaming and forum communities. They came together to make a place for extremely open, fun discussion of whatever people wanted to talk about. Envisioning a very modern, clean forum layout they chose to use the free and open source "Vanilla Forums" software, and while different than traditional forums, it suits our vision perfectly.

    To understand the demand for Hello Buddy, one has to understand the history of the community that inhabits it. In 2008, a DarkRP community was formed titled Serious Roleplaying Hell (SRH). If any of you played DarkRP from 2008 to 2012 you've probably at least heard of it. Aflac joined in 2009 and Tobias in 2010. Both eventually advanced to be co-owners, or the second in command to the owner. Time went on and DarkRP of course got boring for all the older staff, and eventually the community was shut down after a very successful 4 years. In that time, we experimented with HL2RP and other servers, but none took off and the player-base from DarkRP invaded. This may turn some people off, but we promise that is absolutely in our past. So 2 years later, a lot of the older people from SRH (in age, not time spent in SRH) still wanted to talk and mess around a forum someplace. So Hello Buddy was born.

    The other historical factor in the development of Hello Buddy and our HL2RP server is a group known as the Comrades. The Comrades are just a group of friends who own a teamspeak, play games together and put Comrade in front of their steam handle (e.g. Comrade Aflac). They grew out of SRH but pull players from around the world and from other communities, and maintain a core group of about 20 great friends. Hello Buddy HL2RP is a combination of these two worlds. The Comrades wanted a HL2RP server, many being experienced roleplayers, and Hello Buddy was interested in gaining more users who weren't the 12 year old stereotype. So the Comrades run the server, Hello Buddy the forums, and both fly the Hello Buddy flag.

    First and foremost, we do not have any sort of donation reward system. This is highly important to everyone involved, and for now the server is privately funded and will remain so for some time, but small monetary donations are accepted. Flags, adminships, and whitelists will be given on application and experience bases.

    Secondly, time. The leaders of the community and server are of working or college age, and thus must dedicate a lot of time to those things. We are not intended to be a 24/7 server, and will not attempt to be. We will however play quite a bit, and we have a lot of people to draw on to quickly populate the server.

    Third, our story goals. We like the idea of open-ended roleplay. While some things are set in stone to happen or never happen (no "Rebel victory over Combine"), we will allow any roleplayer who knows what they're doing to set their own path. We have placed our admins in positions to foster roleplay in accordance with how we think the story should go, but that does not mean we will force our story down your throat. Want to form your own rebel group? Go ahead, but there's already large existing ones who might not want you on their turf, and in character interaction will determine this.

    Fourth, our professional and development goals. We will maintain an open server, but players who break the rules or roleplay badly will be removed at our discretion. New roleplayers will be given some leeway and helped along but will not be spoonfed. We promise you open and clear discussion of any removal from our server. We do not want a bloated server. We are streamlined and easy on the downloads. There are of course a few, and we may always decide to change our minds about something, but we do intend to keep your waiting time as a player to an absolute minimum.

    Finally, our gameplay goals. We're very traditional in the sense that we expect roleplay to be slow-paced and heavy on in-character interaction. All adversarial actions are roll based unless you choose to play to lose. Any character can choose to play to lose at their discretion if they see it forwarding roleplay.

    Our server is set in 2016 in the industrial sector of City 17. Life is slowly returning to the sector after a crackdown and autonomous judgement of the previous residents. Still wary of rebel groups, the CCA has been slow to return citizens to work, keeping some of the districts of the city completely closed. In our lore, we have explained a lot of seeming inconsistencies and missing information in the Half Life universe. We created a timeline which can be viewed here. The basic premise is still that of traditional HL2, we have not modified it extensively to be particularly unique. We love HL2 as it is, and enjoy the roleplay it fosters. We use traditional institutions such as the CCA and CWU, but hope to build unique cultures in both. We have already modified the ranking and division structure of the CCA to more reflect our goals. Those can be viewed here. There are two existing rebel factions in our server. One is a traditional rebel group, while not associated with the Black Mesa Six, runs much like their group. The other is an Eastern Orthodox religious faction, bent on preserving the Word of God and punishing loyalists for supporting the atheistic Universal Union. Again, more can be viewed here.

    Hello Fixxer! I'm the guy who wrote a lot of this and first I'd like to thank you for your criticism. I was actually looking forward to your response, reading through all the other Community Posts here. I'll be responding to it point by point if you don't mind, but I don't want to sound defensive or excusatory - all of your points definitely make sense. I'd just be curious for suggestions on how to improve things.

    Thanks again, and I hope you have time to respond.

    Seems decent-- vanilla, but looks worth a try.

    I'll be on later tonight, although since your playerbase is rather small, what's considered "peak hours"?

  5. Aflac

    Aflac Big Guy

    Awesome. Since we all hop in a TeamSpeak and just sort of play when we're ready, we haven't really found "peak hours" yet.
    I know I have like little to no work tonight, so I'll pretty much rally up the troops for 6PM EST. We'll be on until probably 9 or 10 EST.

    We just got word of this and working on a fix now, so sorry this happened.

    EDIT: Okay we're just waiting on our coder to fix it. My apologies again.

    // RCT //
    <:: RECRUIT - N/A ::>
    ::// The Civil Enforcement Authorities RCT rank is the first recognized rank of those who Enlist into Union Service. They are considered unassigned in terms of their Squadron or Platoon, and require formal training from an assigned Officer from rank SSpU and above. They are not allowed to hold weapons inside the nexus (Unless Training), nor are they allowed to Patrol. They hold no authority over anyone, and follow standard Union rules \\::

    <::Details / Permissions / Responsibilities::>
    • Refers to Footsoldiers/NCOs by rank, and COs with either "Sir" or "Ma'am"
    • Not permitted to issue any Civil Violation verdicts.
    • Not permitted to carry any firearms or ammunition.
    • No Authority. Signing on is only mandated if you are going to receive training.
    • Not permitted to leave the Nexus unless Off-Duty.

    // i5 - i1 //
    <:: Rank i5 through i1 - N/A ::>
    ::// The Civil Enforcement Authorities have five standard footsoldier ranks put into place. These ranks are used to determine which units have specific levels of training. For example, an i5 has received the least training and experience, but have passed formal Recruit training. An i1 on the other hand has received a lot of experience and training, but not enough to be considered a Standard Patrol Unit - often requiring small amendments to their knowledge to make the cut. They are our typical Patrol Unit, and receive different Permissions and Responsibilities as they climb their rank ladder \\::

    <::Details / Permissions / Responsibilities::>
    • Refers to Footsoldiers/NCOs by rank, and COs with either "Sir" or "Ma'am"
    • Authority is held over Recruits.
      Note: higher ranking units within the i1-i4 rank segment hold no authority over eachother.
    • Permitted to armour capable of withstanding minor blunt trauma and Ten 9x19mm impacts before being rendered useless (centre mass only)

    • Permitted to issue Civil Violation verdicts and administer Re-Education/Detain (i5+)

  11. Triple post, but it was needed, otherwise I'd exceed the character limit. Moving on, I gave you a roster, and a rank structure that a friend and I made. Hopefully you can understand it, and use it to whatever you'd like. You're welcome in advance. :)

    -# = platoon number

    .# = squadron number (keep this one at 1 unless you get like 50 people)

    Copy/paste, ALL of that shit how you like.

    EDIT:

    Use this, unless you just want to use a generic structure.

  12. yeah man
    use augments for OTA only stuff

    commanders should never leave the nexus
    ever

    police = no augments
    ota = augments

    hence the term, "transhuman," in ota
    otherwise your police force wouldnt be mpf
    it'd be, ampf or tmpf

    augmented metropolice force/transhuman metropolice force

    just make sure that if you do keep augments for CP's
    keep them minimal to like, slight speed, and slight reflex and sight enhancements - very slight

    Well thank you very much. I think at this point that set up is a little complicated for us, but I will certainly keep it in my back pocket.

    Yes, this is our plan. Very small augments to 02s, 01s, and OfCs. I will write this into our lore to prevent further confusion.

    As for the OTA, I don't even really see a need for the OTA, I think OTA events are pretty boring unless you're, you know, an OTA.

  14. OTA should never be used unless the Nexus has a damn bomb in it.
    Even after Gordon slaughtered thousands of CP's, they kept sending CP's. Not OTA.

    So, good on you. +rep

    Holy shit, 10 EST is 6 AM for me. I guess I'll never get to play on your servers :(

    Thoughtful 'vanilla' HL2RP may be the last shelter for serious roleplay, I'll hope this project won't disappoint.

    Sorry to hear that... We're pretty much all American and Canadian, and even with in that, most of us are eastern or central time zones (GMT -4/5 respectively). On the weekends we'll probably be able to work something out though!

    I hope we won't disappoint either!

    And we apologize, our server is still having some problems with character creation. We were of course running fine for two weeks until we started this advertisement push. :mad:
    If it's not fixed by tonight you can expect a plea for help on the support boards hahaha
    Looking good.

  18. I'll probably check it out sometime later, though I'm actually more into every CP being completely human.

  19. You're kidding, right? OTA is boring as fuck unless you're the OTA. OTA should never be called in unless the Nexus blew up. That, and when they're protecting the City Administrator. Otherwise it's retarded.

    i2/i1/OfC
    or 02 and 01

    Having slight hearing/visual/reflex enhancement shouldn't be a problem. So long as they don't go full out Deus Ex retardation. The dumbest thing would be having OTA called in for ten CP's dying. The most that calls for is a Commander to visit the CP Nexus and give the CP's a good talking to, as well as deployments in the field.

    Gordon Freeman had thousands of CP's sent after him. Not just one, or five. Like a thousand. Once he got out of the City, or near Nexus buildings - because he was such a HUGE threat - They called in Overwatch to eliminate him. That's now after killing one CP, mind you - That's after killing like a million. And even fighting an entire resistance group and refugees. As you saw in-game, they still used CP's until Gordon came around.

    I'm not sure you have the slightest idea of the lore behind the Combine. They're boring as fuck because they do nothing but shoot shit.

    At the end of the day, you haven't played HL2, and 02/01 have very slight augmentations, from the looks of it, because they're trusted units. You shouldn't have to be a CO to have augments. It's the other way around. If you're a CO and you have augments, that's pretty retarded, because once you're a CO, you never see the field of battle ever again - That is, unless you're special forces. Which the CP aren't. CO's command. Footsoldiers do the dirty-work.

    I love this. I, too, am super into having CP's totally human - It's a good thing, because y'know, character development and non-robots for a change. It's a relief, almost, to be able to roleplay something other than a mindless robot.

    These are very small modifications we're talking about here. Things that won't affect combat or anything of the like, just for some IC depth. Personalities are maintained until the DvL, a rank that only 3 players would hold if we had a bumpin' server.

    Sure, OTA events can be maybe fun if very well set up, but even then I think they're the ones who will getting the true enjoyment. Like ळेमुर् said, they're called out in the canon (something we're sticking relatively close to) for some pretty serious havoc.
    As far as I understand it, the OTA isn't really even meant for policing Earth, they were meant to supplement Combine armies, it just so happens that the Army was needed for the open rebellion of the latter half of HL2 and the Episodes. We never plan on having any sort of open rebellion, and any serious armed force could be handled by the APEX specialist group, which is basically a SWAT team.
