HL2RP Map

Discussion in 'Programming' started by FinC09, Apr 22, 2013.

  1. Hi there I am making a HL2RP map called rp_city13. I have made a post on facepunch but thought I would get better advise here. I have started making the nexus.
It's not great I know and if you have any idea how I could make it better please post.

I have made some changes since these photos where taken here.

If you want to play it you can get it here

I definitely suggest adding something to the walls, combine decals etc and on http://postimg.org/image/wkmafku6v/ that black shadow looks out of place
Widows on the cells? maybe a office area in the prison

It just looks plain boring and horrible, No offense.

  3. I have since added some decals and got rid of the shadow. also that pic is the hallway so I don't want it too packed. But if you can think of anything I can add then go ahead.
Im not sure if I should put the offices in the second floor or where I should put them.
I would like to keep the prison apart from the rest of the nexus.

  4. I feel as if there should be a lot more objects. Right now there is a lot of flooring and not too many things that are on them.

  5. You need to add supports and architectural detail, your level design does not look believable. This is very important for a roleplay map to help develop immersion.

Here are some useful links on Source level design documentation:
    http://www.interlopers.net/tutorials/General_Half-Life_2/Architecture
    https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Category:Level_Design
    http://www.halfwit-2.com/?page=tutorials&category=2

I'm guessing you're pretty new to mapping, but with time and patience you should become more comfortable with the basics of the source development kit. Use those links for good building blocks, you won't become an expert immediately. I also recommend you actually do some research on architecture, many level designers are very educated in building structural design, but you do not need a University degree to be good at using Source SDK.

The level of your level design skills depends on you, it all depends how much effort and time you wish to spend on your levels. If you design because it makes you feel good, not just because you need a custom map or want attention, then you should be fine.

EDIT: I do not recommend you use Facepunch, unless you desire for the absolute lowest form of nonconstructive criticism.

  6. I'm trying to come up with a good way to use the second floor. I thought maybe I could have offices on stilts and have like and office for the DvLs and SeC and the city administrator. I also thought about putting the city administrators office in a separate compartment on the roof but I mean I don't want everyone going through his office to get to the roof. Also thought I would make this map more prison orientated because most maps/servers you just stay in your cell till your time is up. I thought of adding a mine and the prisoners have to work there.

All of these are just ideas and I would like to know what you think.

The city is not even done yet, how can you call it a city?

  8. That is what I plan to call the map understand?
This is In no way finished or even close.

Started working on main apartment block looks a bit like the apartments from the (new) judge dread film untextured.

I havent finished the nexus yet (just saying not to confuse anyone.)
