HL2RP Hope & fun VS Oppression & boringness.

Discussion in 'Discussion' started by thevaultkid, Feb 5, 2015.

  1. That's the problem I've come up with. Do you want fun characters and lore, stuff that makes people feel current and hopeful in general, or do you want a bunch of mid-80's systematic genocide with a bunch of outdated tech and people stripped of their humanity awaiting the day they die.

Now knowing C16 people are probably gonna say that the fun option is edgy and dumb, while the oppression option is the way to go because it's more mature.

Here's the deal: The age-group. Try keeping middle-schoolers/ high-schoolers entertained with an accurate depiction of the absolute worst humanity is capable of is kinda... Impossible, as Laymen would word it.

"Why are you trying to appeal to an inferio--" Shut up.

I kinda gave up on the whole "systematic Genocide" thing when I found out that people try to use games to escape the horrors of their real lives so demonstrating whole-sale murder probably isn't the best stress relief for your average dude.

And I mean as a general rule of thumb, diving through the air in Slow-Motion in some edgelordy nightclub and shooting lolwebuls to "Do the hustle" while holding a gun in your right hand and like Bioshock Eve powers in the other is a freakin' blast.

If anyone knows how to combine these two themes then let me know, because honestly the only solution I've found is TnB's ascetic, which definitely leaned towards the "Fun" side of things.

That grammar was poor enough to kill a man.

I think its about affecting the best roleplay possible out of the demographic that plays your server. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the demographic that plays Garry's Mod is in the 11-17 range. The ones who aren't already have their havens, so its really about getting the best roleplay out of that 13-17 range that can maybe at least understand what roleplay is.

Then it comes down to a quality control argument. Do you want cheap, fun roleplay with a high player count? Or do you want to play the long game, wait months to build a player base and self sustaining system, all while working on it yourself? It's not really up to us, it's up to you. We know what we want to play. Some of us will go for the former, most will go for the former, but we all already probably have servers we are "established" on, like I said.

And that's not to say a hopeful day isn't possible on a more tightly controlled server. Roleplay shouldn't just be about constant oppression by the civil protection, if HL2RP is what we're talking about here. Think deeply about what the civil protection's goals and objectives would actually be, and realize that they'd probably be more human than we commonly imagine. That's my opinion on the matter, is all.

  3. I'm doing like... HL2RP's distant cousin. The MPF are nerfed to hell and the Resistance doesn't exist and it's the 80's and people have EVE powers for some reason.

The MPF more meat in the grinder than anything else in my lore. They're equipped with like a dress-shirt and maybe the Squad Leader has Kevlar, but most of them are just carrying around mid-60's police batons, and once in a while they're issued a gun. There's no "MPF.UNION-05.21354", it's more like "Isaki.Briggs", so the strider-dick-cannons don't really pop up any more.

And this is basically because there's no need for all that protection. There's no Resistance movement, so the Civilians can't get weapons, so we don't need freakin' Mr. Sectorial with a Minigun.
Come to think of it, the ranking system is completely different. So basically, the MPF have no control over anything that happens, they're just cannon-fodder who can more-or-less enforce the laws.

There's no OTA either, it's replaced with the GSDF, which is what would be a more properly equipped MPF unit, and they're usually called in if there's a problem beyond some 2-man-crusade.

There's lore behind it, but the Civilians get entertainment like Civigrade augments that're more just novelties, and like modeling programs built into a hand augment so they can sculpt small statutes as holograms and shit, TV shows, music, that kind of stuff. It's basically so they feel more free therefore less rebellious.
