HL2RP Making A Better HL2RP Server

Hello everybody! After a year of inactivity and a hiatus from HL2RP and gmod, I'm back, and im looking for some help. I've ran HL2RP servers on about 3 different communities over the past few years. All of them however, weren't exactly popular, and I've spent some time on the forums here and come to realize that a big factor in the low quality of my servers is the fact that im not very original when it comes to them. I really just do run of the mill vanilla HL2RP, I really have a passion for the gamemode, and I really want to try to get something together that is unique for once, and has appealing in-depth game-play for everyone on every faction, not just "rebels are killing combine, combine are killing rebels, and citizens are waiting around for the next ration cycle because #VanillaRP" I'm looking for serious constructive input here, on how to try and make this dream a reality. Be it lore ideas, recommended features, etc I want to hear what you have to say. Also if anyone would be willing to assist with development when needed that would be greatly appreciated, because I am no where near capable of quality clockwork programming. I can set up the server, fiddle with basic features, and that's about it. In-depth development for things such as custom features and debugging? Way outside my skill level

There's already tons of servers doing the same old city rp thing, so it's good that you're thinking of doing something different. I wouldn't mind getting involved with dev stuff if you're interested.

Thanks, I'd appreciate all the help I can get. How good are you with clockwork? Would you be able to help with custom features or just things like debugging and whatnot?

Thank you. I tried pitching a 7 Hour WarRP server awhile back but everyone got too hung up on the idea that "its 7 hour war rp, so is the server only going to be up for 7 hours?" and how much would you be able to help with development?

7 hour war rp is a terrible idea. Clockwork RP is far too slow paced to ever have that actually work as an idea.

Depends on the situation, really. I probably wouldn't be too active of a developer, mainly working on jobs fairly casually since I have a life outside of gmod and such. But I can defiantly do a reasonable amount of work.

You can open your server like this and start seven hour war rp until it ends, but do not whitelist otas bcs they were humans.
They can not capture and make otas so fast they just came in the world.

That is actually a good idea. Only thing is that the steady playerbase of decent RPers has gone down over time, I doubt there would be enough players on over the 7 hour period to make it worth it. Although I could always just have it whitelisted players only and let people request a slot before hand.

  11. A good way to try and begin this, in my opinion, is too build up community hype. Once you have a decent amount of players "hyped" for it, give a juicy release date for it. Also, include a steam group page so you can send a notification to everyone in it.

The reason I think people don't think "7-hour-war" RP would be good, is because they actually think that the server will only last a day (due to the 7 hours), but they forget that stuff happened /after/ the war. So repeating what Outro said, try and focus on the survivors/remnants, and possibly the colonization of the combine post-war. It'll give in to some interesting scenarios, I bet.

If you're hard on ideas for post-war, think of it like this: The war just ended, and any combine-human physical relationships (i.e. MPF/Overwatch/Humanoid synths) do not exist yet. Combine architecture doesn't exist yet (at least in mass quantities). How the main enemy might look is synths everywhere, combine ships flying by often, and synths/robots building and creating combine architecture and herding citizens into "concentration camp" areas. There are several maps already made that I think may be good for these scenarios.

rp_evocity: A possible good start for the event. Beginning of combine invasion.

rp_apocalypse: A great start for post-war. Dark, gritty and foggy atmosphere, with many places to explore.

rp_pripyat_hl2: concentration camp type map, with some combine tech. A good time to switch to this is after about a month the server is alive. If it is still chugging along, then having maybe a time-lapse, or an event that causes the combine to herd up all the remaining citizens when switching from "map B" to this (map C)

I would also have another focus is all the Xen creatures that would be roaming around the post-war wastes, as there would be plenty of them.

    ------

Also, if this is what the server ends up planning to be, invite me man. I would love to see that type of server.

I really like this idea. May I add you on steam? So I can get some more insight in how I should set things up if I go this route?

  15. Sure thing, man: http://steamcommunity.com/id/MrGarryTophat

  16. Hl2RP, mass Ravenholm RP. Literally headcrab zombies everywhere with the combine all but beaten, the survivors, UU or humanity, have to eak out a living in the infested place.

That could be interesting but difficult to implement. I could see NPCs getting in the way of a lot of RP and I think most events would just devolve into starwarsrp events (e.g. admins spawning NPCs everywhere while everyone shoots them). Of course you could do otherwise, but it's difficult to please the masses.

  18. Well, after doing it in the past, it was really successful. I was head admin for a server that did it. Most of the HL2 zombies are too slow unless you spawn fast zombies. A lot of it was stealthy looting along with building up fortifications, ambushing rogue UU, etc. Though, I lost access to internet in the middle of it so I'm not sure what happened to the server.
