Midnight Animal

Discussion in 'Video Games' started by The Way Home, Nov 25, 2016.

  1. So I've been watching this game for a while now, its a hotline miami-esque top down shooter game, with a great ost on par with both HM and HM2's OST's, more weapons and more interesting things such as abilities, explosive weapons, heaps of custom sprites and masks, a new story with new characters (this game is set in NY, not miami) and other shit. The effort he's putting into it is really something and I'm hyped for its release, paid or free otherwise.
He's just released a free demo of the game (first level), download link is on the site below and that'll probably give you an indication of just how much effort has been put into it.
Here's the link to the site: https://spncryn.itch.io/midnight-animal download link is near the bottom of the page.e

btw disregard the date of aug 2016 in that video, the guy has switched to a very laid back approach and releases updates on development every month if not longer.

Just gonna say, if you liked HM or HM2 I'd suggest you keep informed - I think it might be free but I'm not entirely sure.

apparently there's no way to play it on Windows 10 w/out putting it on a Win7 VM.

  3. I could play the demo fine and I have Win 10

  4. When was this demo put up? I've been following this game for a couple months and I'm hyped for its official release.

u sure? i'd get a 'no memory' error when i tried to open it. the readme says that it cant run on win 10 either.

  6. Yep, demo worked fine albeit a few errors which just required a game restart

  7. Not that long ago P sure, it was released with Spencer's last progress update.

  8. Just played it for 20 minutes or so. Exactly what I expected it to be, but it has many issues like the feeling of a lower framerate at points, lots of crashing, enemies shooting through walls, enemies fazing through walls, firing at non-existent walls, being able to rapidly go from one area to the next, etc etc. Lots of bugs that need to be ironed out.

On the last area of the first level the enemy in the bathroom just walked through the wall into a little area where I couldn't even glitch shoot him. So I had to restart the level, and the restart button crashed me.

  9. weird, I had crashes but no enemy errors like phasing thru walls and shit. AI did feel a bit less inclined to being baited like in HM2 though

  10. More of a level design flaw but in the first area of the level there's a static enemy who is placed too close to a prop, so whenever I tried to shoot him with a crossbow or bow and arrow (my current favourite weapons) it would hit the prop before it hit him. Otherwise I was having a lot of fun with the demo.

Edit: Actually finished the demo, pretty impressed with the dialogue changes Spencer has made. Looking forward to the full game.

  11. played the demo. just as i expected. can't wait for release.

  12. That's actually soul crushing. I fucking hate anime and everything it touches, they had such a great concept going but ruined it on stupid weebshit.

  13. What did they change? I never got to see the original concept.

  14. Last year midnight animal was looking like a cool, more modern mod of Hotline Miami, as seen in the videos op provides. Recently it has undergone major changes and has basically turned into the persona series on the HLM engine. Kind of a let down considering we were promised a kickass, fast paced extension of the HLM experience, but it looks more like we'll get that but with a bunch of gay visual novel bullshit lazily tossed into the mix. It looks like Spencer Yan / possibly the moderators (if there are any), have gone and locked lots of community page threads ranging from "wtf this sucks" to "Why were the changes made?". A little shit on their part imo.

  15. Ah, yeah. That's pretty bad. I don't think that Visual Novels are the worst thing in the world but this is definitely a downgrade in quality from what you describe. The community problem also seems sketchy but at the end of the day it's their game and if noone's going to buy it/play it then it's lesson learned on their part.

Wow, can't believe he took a potentially really good game on his hands and threw it away for some stupid anime weebshit game.

Only thing that can save it now is some REALLY good gameplay.

  17. lol
it doesn't even look that bad fuck are you guys on about
    game still looks lit
aesthetics still on point, and if anything look better with the whole black and white thingy its got going on in the screenies
music still sounds sicc from a quick look at spencer's big soundcloud playlist for potential songs
honestly I don't get the big deal with adding some anime faces into it, which don't really look like anime tbh - just cartoon looking and developing the story a bit more than they did in hotline miami

    also, reason for locked thread(kinda?):

  18. It's because it's stupid weebshit. It's literally weebshit, there's no going around that.

The game setting was moved to New York / New Jersey yet uses Japanese imagery and the language it self in promotional art, wow, because that really screams Urban America. I also don't like how he tip-toes around with "it wasnt meant to be related to hotline miami" because the game was supposed to set after the Soviet nuclear attack but all of a sudden that didn't happen? Fuck off. It's very clear what he did.
