Octocat HL2RP.

Discussion in 'Communities' started by Lyut, Jan 28, 2014.

  1. Hi! I'm Lyut, but I'm not really going to talk about myself here, but about the server. It's called Octocat gaming - allow me to show you the logo:

Yeah, that adds a sprinkle of awesomeness to the server presentation. Ok, so, in all seriousness: we think that our community idea is going to work and I'm going through this post to explain why. We're not saying we are unique, as many normal servers with TnB and some plugins but same roleplay claim to be - of course, we have around 30 mods and some plugins I fixed from OA by myself - but that's not why I think we are "hard to find". I think the server management overall is what makes this community strong. There are so many servers out there; Grab a server, drop HL2RP, mount some addons, invite friends and let's all be MPF and spawn us stuff - that's the average server. I've rarely found servers that REALLY were interesting and managed to get me on even for a couple of months, without changing server or game. I myself am a guy who takes fun and immersion seriously. Whenever I play games (or even better, whenever I imagine I am what I roleplay) I always think I'm really in the game and I hate when something breaks the immersion - I want everything to be as perfect s possible. And most of it, I really hate admins abusing their powers or not knowing how to use them. That's why I choose 2 of the best admins I could ever choose - because I want my players to feel like having the same possibilities of an admin, without the need to deal with rule-breakers and such. That's how I'd like my server to be like. And so far, it seems going this way. Now, I know that for many of you, citizen RP might sound boring, or even "the same" for ever server, and you're going to claim that there's basically nothing new. I actually must admit I prefer playing citizen than unit, for example - as it is hard and you can never relax, however everyone has their preferences.

Now I'd like to talk about what's REALLY interesting and exciting about our server and why you should really try it out - I talked only about what I think you might think and what I hope my server would be like. I'm going straight ahead and say that generally you can choose two big paths that are either going to be a big success for you or a horrible failure - either to be a rebel or a loyalist. I personally think doing nothing of those two is what makes it really boring after a while.

If you choose to be a rebel...

As a general rebel you should know your tasks. You don't like the combine oppressors, you want to be free, do what you want. You know you need friends, potential other rebels that have your same idea. Rebel Roleplay is very hard, especially when getting started. We have gas masks, sewers and such - we try to make a sort of rebel-only environment - however we decided to keep gas away for like the first OOC week (you might still be able to find filters tho), since we prefer everyone to get started and know eachother and mainly stay in the city instead of all going away. You can even find around metal, wood and stuff like that, to use by crafting. Either that, or we made a big deal out of the whole BMD concept - let me explain. In the majority of the servers, admins just give BMDs flags, they go on business and spawn the shipment. srs bsns rp. Well, no. The admins are the only one that are going to have flags and when BMDs need something we will make a sort of event, RPing that the package comes from the outlands or things like that - we're going to place the shipment or whatever it is in the borders of the map, or some place hard to access. Also, depending by the size, the bigger it is the bigger the chances that combine will notice something's going on. This adds risk and fun, so the BMD can successfully retrieve his contraband, but at the same time he might be risking his life. There are many more things that rush in my head but it would be impossible to write everything here, there are many more things about that very type of roleplay that I would like to say. But, it's you making your roleplay, so hop in and create your own experience.

If you choose to be a loyalist...

I have to be honest, I think loyalist RP is hard aswell. You need to gain rebels trust even with your armband, if you want to catch them easily - as they wont just go outside for the streets and shout to everyone that they're rebels. I seriously don't have anything to say about loyalist RP, there are many ways to do it, the most simple is to just follow the rules. It's an interesting experience and I suggest it to everyone!

We decided to allow citizens to work. Yeah, that's cool. You can apply to become a working class citizen and start working for various sectors. You'll have double rations aswell. It's a very interesting experience, you can make friendships or know people you hate, you can be the best employee or try to smug something to resell or for yourself, you can kinda do everything you could do on a work session (of course, common sense rules apply). Besides just being an industrial worker you can even be assigned to any other kind of job which is useful for the community (except janitors - we have cremators, we don't need janitors). The map is small enough but at the same time it has many various places to roleplay. I personally don't dislike it, but one of our admins thinks it's horrible. Yeah, I think it's not the usual map but it's cool aswell. It takes place in City 11, in Israel. We're open for suggestions, we prefer to change map now than later. We're going to make some sort of event regarding the evacuation, it's probably going to be fun aswell.

    Now, why we're here.
We're lacking of a solid playerbase, we're a community of six ex-LP members, met back on the good old revotech days, so yeah - we're kinda looking for people to play with. We don't really like to admit it, but it's like that. We think our community has potential but we haven't got the occasion to find it out yet. Now, about the proper community. I'm a student and I spent half of my money on this project, and, if I have to be honest I prefer a free alternative when I can. So, yes, I have a dot tk domain. Don't hate, please, the alternative was just the IP. If the project goes well and I see you guys really like it, I'm surely going to add money on this project, so don't worry. I hope you're not going to hate...

And now to our servers specs!

I have two dediboxes, one is a 2 GB of RAM Windows Server box where I host the servers and the DB, and the second one is a CentOS box where I host the forums. It's very slow by the way and crashes very much, I'm planning into a second windows server or upgrade the current one to host both servers and forums at the same time. They're both hosted in Italy and I personally manage them, no one else in the community has control over them.

    Regarding donations...

As I said I'm a student and I have limited money, I do something on coderhire sometimes to get those $10, but I dont want you guys to pay for me, it's MY idea, MY community (well actually not, I'm not the founder but I put a lot of effort into it). Except for ingame heart status, you wont get anything. No. We don't want to encourage donations. If you want to donate it must be because you REALLY want to help us out, you really like the community and what you're donating is the cost of the servers. You have the same chances to get PET as a normal user - by proving to be mature, so, no benefits. That's it. I highly dislike servers offering admins or what not.

I'm not talking much about the MPF system and/or other whitelist - I want to keep their information private, just for them. I just want to say we're not using high ranking but Civil Intention five to one. I put a lot of effort into this, I hope it was worth it.
I'd be very glad if you could just join a couple of minutes and try us out - maybe why not inviting your friends too!

I'm appreciating all criticism, as long as it's constructive! I take it very seriously, I will try to fix everything you dislike/think it's dumb, answer to your question/appeals and what not - say anything you feel like saying, I want to make my server the best and hope it would be a useful lesson for my future!

    Best regards
    Lyut, developer of Octocat HL2RP.

    The IP is 178.239.178.43
and the community forums are moving to the same IP, http://city11.tk - since the linux machine took a huge brain fart and refuses to boot up.

    srs rp.

Outstanding thread, I really like it. But in all honesty, even though you've told us what you're going to do, I don't really see it ever differentiating from any server. Your rebel faction sounds the same, your CWU faction sounds the same, and your Citizen faction sounds the same. Working citizens is already a thing on multiple servers; it's not all that different.

    So, 9/10 thread, but a 6/10 representation.

Who are your two other staff members? Steam links, please.

  5. I think I agree with you, I haven't said much about them, mainly beacuse my whole idea is that players have to create their environment, I don't really think it's always the same, it's different if YOU want to make it different.

Thank you. But, yeah. I feel the same about roleplay. People need to be different, not the server, y'know?

  7. Yeah, that's exactly what I wanted to mean. I'm happy there's people thinking it the way I think.

  8. Thanks :)
Actually the logo is just made on top of the flat UI concept, and it's not even our full logo. The one we have on the forums also has a little octocat icon next to it.

English isn't my main language and if you could try to point out the errors that would be helpful for me.

And regarding the performance, I'm sure it can handle it. It did in the past and I'm sure it will now. If not, then I will just upgrade it, that's it :)

    Thanks for your opinions.

Haven't gotten a chance to go on the server yet, but the walls of text really just tell us what we already know about HL2RP, and the donations section makes up a good fourth of the thread. Maybe.

  10. Then you probably didn't read the whole wall of text.

Still thanks for letting us know your opinion :D

Nah, it's pretty standard. Still, I love the setting. Any idea if it's the deserts or more urban areas?

  12. Urban, of course. If you want to look at it it's in the workshop. I'd love some feedback on it since it's what worries me the most. I also forgot to add that we're an EU community and we don't really play much during the night :)

  15. What you're saying is just basically "tl;dr", why dont you try to read it? It just takes 2 minutes ;)

Yes, we actually got inspired from github :)

  16. do you not realize how long two minutes is to read
    /two minutes/
