As I mentioned earlier, it's not Trump that's scary. Like you say, I doubt he actually believes half his own words, but there's a LOT of people who do. Not the half-ironic internet types who can't even vote anyways, but thousands of middle aged Republicans are voting for him. They're the danger, not Trump. Trump's just saying the things out loud that the GOPs mouthpieces have been hinting at for years.

He still is unelectable. The party is scrambling to figure out exactly how to handle the situation in which he does win the nomination, because everything he's ever said can be put on a Hillary or Sanders ad, played over and over in Florida, Ohio, North Carolina, Nevada, and the other battlegrounds and he won't win. The numbers are barely there for any Republican to win, go do the electoral math. The Democrats need to win in 3 to 4 battleground states (that they're looking to lock down), the republicans need to win in 8-9. Trump (or another Republican) as a third party would spoil the election.

Like you say, Trump isn't dumb. He knows this all as well as we do. He's doing this to 1. fuck with people 2. get his name out there for some other purpose. Hell, there's a pretty strong argument (although its conspiracy bullshit) out there that Trump is doing this to hurt the GOP and aid the Democrats. He's a historical centrists and was a big friend to the Clinton's for a long time.
