Time, Dr. Freeman? Is it really that time again? It seems as if you only just arrived. You've done a great deal in a small time span. You've done so well, in fact, that I've received some interesting offers for your services.

After the portal explosion that Gordon Freeman caused at the citadel, the humans "won", cheered, escaped the city, and were going to rebuild human civilization.

This had never happened.

Instead, after "seeing" extreme amounts of portal activities (explosions, openings, closings) a new; a different race went to investigate. These were called the Universal Alterian Empire, a race very similar to the Combine. Militaristic, Martial Law, and enslaving other species. As heard from a sentence earlier, earth was the perfect place to be, but they had a problem. A competitor - the Combine. Realizing the U.A.E. could lose a potentially resourceful planet, they soon started to attack Combine outposts in hope of winning over the planet.

They were equal powers.

They attacked each other fiercely with strong weapons, equal weapons,
and more dangerous acts. These actions continued until a final explosion happened,
during an escape attempted by the last citizens alive. Their train derailed and nearly
crumpled as a set UAE mine went off, and the survivors were stranded.

You - The Refugee

You wake up in a pile of rubble. You only have short flashes of what happened. You remember some of the people sitting next to you on the train. You remember the screams of chaos, saddened faces, and worried looks. The sky was black and filled with fire, a war begun. You could see Combine rushing, bodies falling, and many, many tragic things happenings all at once. Vortigaunt portals appearing rapidly around you, and then all of a sudden you hear the roar of a huge beast. The ground shakes, almost like an earthquake. You fly forward and you see your friend next to you get stabbed in the heart by a metal rod. You hit your head. You faintly hear screams and cries and then everything goes blank. You then wake up to nothingness, everything is quite. You have a major headache, and slowly get up. You see dead bodies hanging out of the train, blood stains everywhere, and debris all over the place. Your balance is off at first, but you slowly recover and go out to the real world of chaos . . .

The Refugee - The standard run-away, the person who's always afraid and terrified of all possible things that may come. This character is the one that you will (probably) get attached to, and want to develop.

The Vortigaunt - One of Xen's finest; or not developed from Xen, but they are from there. These particular creatures have strange powers called Vortessent, which can provide much use...

The Combine/Overwatch - The remains of the once-powerful Combine, these soldiers are cruel as they're precious monopoly on Earth had just been taken away. These characters will usually be seen wandering the Outlands, like a lost soul looking for home.

The Universal Alterian Empire - A new race to humans, a sworn enemy to the Combine. These figures will usually move in groups around the Outlands, searching for land to claim...or to take forcefully.
