The date is 1995, the setting being that of the Black Mesa Research Facility, or the B.M.R.F for short; the headquarters for the Black Mesa corporation, doubling as their primary research and development facility, housing over 5000 personnel, all of which have a residence within the facility itself. Although the facility employs just over 1000 security personnel, they are still dwarfed by the amount of on-site science team members, all of which specifying in a certain field and/or complex. Our server is set in Sector C, normally referred to as 'BCP', standing for the three main fields they research; biology, chemistry, and physics... Or at least that's what those without clearance assume they research.
There is an ever-expanding list of the roles you can play on our server, or do for that matter; once you have gained extra clearance as a scientist, there is an expansive list of subjects available to work in, some of the most notable of which being the Xen study group and the hand-picked survey team;their assignment is the most dangerous, as they are tasked with entering the border world Xen to collect samples and conduct experiments. Because of the danger, Survey Team members are highly trained in the use of the HEV Suit and a variety of weapons. Many Survey Team scientists have died on Xen.
You have the option to play as one of these scientists, specifying in a field of your choice within reason, respecting the clearance levels when roleplaying your character's knowledge of what happens within the facility. There are other options, though. The Black Mesa Security Force are the sole in-house defense of Black Mesa, responsible for protecting the information and assets within the facility from those that wish to seize it. The choice is truly yours on what you want to play, you could even take a more passive approach to a role such as a chef, a part of the maintenance staff or even a member of the medical personal.
We hope to keep admin interaction to a bare minimum, relying on the administrator, government officials, and prominent faction members to handle most of the affairs; the server is truly in the player's hands, allowing for a diverse, reactive role-playing environment.
- Starting Factions
When you first join the server, you will be able to choose from a variety of different factions which you can create a character in. With this character, you will be able to progress within this faction’s career path, starting off as Level 1, and over time, progressing up to Level 4. As your character levels up within a career, they will receive an increased salary, as well as in some cases access to higher security areas within the facility and even more equipment which will allow you to do your job to a greater standard.

- "Why do we all have to wear these ridiculous ties?"
- Starting Position: Research Assistant/Trainee
The Black Mesa Science Team is the overwhelming majority of Black Mesa's population. With the Black Mesa Security Force, it is one of the most important bodies of the Black Mesa personnel, perhaps even the most important.
As a member of the science team, you will be playing the role of a man or woman that has graduated in a field of science, the exact qualifications up to you, but you should stay within reason. On starting your job at Black Mesa, you will work in your respective field, the initial divisions being categorized into 3 choices: physics, biology, and chemistry (up to the player, specifically the qualifications they choose deciding their division/field.)
After you spend time working on projects assigned by your superiors, or those that you have applied to take part in (forums, IC section taking place as a facility network, only requiring a small application) your seniors will take notice, allowing you to climb higher up the corporate ladder, opening doors to a higher clearance level and more interesting, classified and of course, more dangerous experiments and projects.
Of course, as you progress through clearance levels more divisions of expertise will become available to, such as Xen biology, the elite 'survey team', which is handpicked from promising scientists, as well as many more options. There will also be the chance to refine your skills into a role within the facility, such as an instructor; responsible for training new employees and conducting simulators in the Sector A Training Facility, as themselves or their hologram counterparts, or one of the many other roles!

- "Hey! Catch me later, I'll buy you a beer!"
- Starting Position: Cadet
The Black Mesa Security Force is the main component of Black Mesa's support personnel force. Along with the Black Mesa Science Team, it is one of the most important bodies of the Black Mesa personnel.
As a member of the security, you will oversee the facility, ensuring the protection of the facility's assets and the well-being of the personnel, being granted clearance to certain areas, depending on your duty and rank. Most of your time will be spent patrolling the facility, escorting visitors and government officials as well as guarding high-level clearance doors, ensuring they remain safe.
Cadets do not have any significant equipment other than their uniform, radio, and armor, but can assert just the same authority. As you progress the ranks your clearance level will raise, allowing you to patrol new areas and bestowing more opportunities upon you, as well as more gear, such as the standard Glock 20, some of the highest ranks even flaunting a .357 Magnum, facility regulation demanding an open, safe carry at all times, the weapon only authorized to be removed in a situation deemed as an 'emergency'.
The same as the scientist role, there is a multitude of specific roles that are achievable, such as an instructor; responsible for training new cadets, mentoring them on how to exceed as a Black Mesa security officer, also training them in the Sector A Training Facility, as themselves or their hologram counterparts, allowing for combat experience with no real threat. There is a multitude of other roles available, all which being accessed ICly.
Remember, this faction requires a forum application!

- "Hey! I just cleaned that!"
- Starting Position: Maintenance Staff Trainee
The role of maintenance personnel is much simpler than that of a scientist or security guard, only having one core responsibility; ensure the facility runs smoothly. They are tasked with the repair and upkeep of the more basic facilities, such as the power, heating, ventilation, water, drainage and sanitation systems within the facility, as well as making sure the general area within their clearance is clean.
There isn't much of a ranking system when compared to a faction like the guards, but there is still a ranking system, granting extra, but limited clearance, also unlocking further tools for use. I advise only playing this faction if you enjoy repair and mechanical based roleplay. There is a compulsory interview at the beginning of your career in the maintenance field, but this goes over very quickly, simply find a senior maintenance team member!
- "Soup of the day?"
- Starting Position: Chef Trainee
To roleplay as a chef can be very easily, but also very rewarding when it comes to passive roleplay, allowing for a lot of detail to be put into simple actions, providing food for all the personnel within the facility, even the administrator if you're lucky! There is a built in crafting to allow actual food preparation, allowing for customization and adding extra ingredients in your food, but it might not always go so well!
On becoming a chef you need to complete a compulsory interview, just like the maintenance team member. You are only allowed to serve pre-made food until this interview is completed.
- "Lemme patch that up for you."
- Starting Position: Medical Assistant
This is one of the more structured 'passive' factions, having a ranking system rivaling that of the security's system, even boasting divisions such as general medicine, surgery, etc. All of the ranking and divisional placing is done ICly, the only difference between the ranks being that of access to higher grade medical equipment and authority.
Like the other two branches of 'passive' factions, there is a compulsory interview, which will pass quickly. Until this interview has been completed you are not ICly authorized to privately treat patients, only being able to help if it is deemed a problem that would interfere with their efficiency in the workplace, and/or put others in danger.
There is also much more factions available, most of which will be applicable!
Here are some examples!
- Government Official
- Administration Board
- Xen specimens/animals
- Visitors
- DCT (Disturbance Control Team)
