Switch to XenForo

Folks!

After discussing with kurozael after some recent changes for him (more on that later, maybe), some changes are happening. First of all, glorious [member=5482]duck[/member] will be taking over leadership of Clockwork (in a sense he's charge of its development now) while [member=1]kurozael[/member] wil focus on some other Cloud Sixteen stuff. In the light of these recent changes, we're going to gauge the community response in changing from SMF to XenForo in the future.

Unless the absolute majority refuses this change, this may happen either way. We'll see how it goes. With that being said, some of you are probably worried about losing your posts and the likes-- we'll try to bring over everything we can. I'll be taking charge of that process, and I'll test it multiple times before we make the switch to make sure everything is carried over. In addition, it may bring some neat, custom features in the future.

So!

Before I end this post, here's a list of some pros and advantages:

Pros

• Easier for us to modify, we can add some neat features over time
• More modern, mobile friendly out of the box and an extensive community
• Better performance

Cons

• Some data may be lost, more information on this would come later
• May be unfamiliar for our current users
• May take some time

Personally, I think this would be beneficial in the long run. But up to you guys!

Would you guys be willing to swap to XenForo in the future? This will happen at an undefined date, but it may be a couple of months ahead in time.

I feel as if this could be a good idea, though, Xenforo takes a lot of stuff to make it look good, not to mention it's not as flexible and easy as SMF.

 

It's the exact opposite in terms of flexibility. I've had a couple of reasonable ideas in my head for features, but they're hard to do because of SMFs codebase. Not to mention any changes we do to it is automatically owned by SMF as per their license. It's not development friendly, it's outdated and the only patches it gets nowadays is security.

SMF 3 has been in the works for 6 years now. It's not going anywhere.

As long as its licensed to c16 and not a back alley product. Plus im not really keen on xenforo go vbulletin like fp.

Why not NodeBB?

 

While I like NodeBB (I've contributed some code to it), it's too alien so far for gaming communities, to be honest. Same goes for stuff like Discourse, esoTalk and the likes.

The XenForo switch will happen eventually - more information will be provided when we approach the switchover. There'll be a planned maintenance period of 2-4 hours as we get everything working on that day - but I'm making sure everything works perfectly before that.

Either myself, Songbird or kurozael will make a post when the switch is happening (a week or so in advance hopefully).
