Tatters Roleplay- "Product Pitch"

Discussion in 'Discussion' started by aphoticDeception, Dec 7, 2016.

  1. Tl;dr I have an idea for a custom schema and need help

    I- Introduction.

Hi there, my name is aphoticDeception, but I also have gone by Shadowsalmon and Greasemonkey, take your pick. I am a long time roleplayer but a novice server owner. However, I think I am ready to try my hand at a serious rp community. Though it may be a somewhat poor idea to start with such an ambitious project, this post serves simply to gauge people’s interest in my ideas. Feel free to read and leave any criticism in the comments.

    II-Lore.

It is the year 2342 in the Midwestern united states. Nearly 350 years of development has turned society into a powerhouse. Modern technology has allowed us to break free of the confines of Earth and our moon, and expand our attention to Mars. Through our denial of gravity itself, we are slowly developing the power to rival gods. Terraforming technology is a reality, research into CAS-9 and CRISPR turned out fruitful, and cancer has been all but eradicated. Some may expect this future to be one where we have become soft, too reliant on our technology. But instead, this future has fostered a society built on principles of equality and mutual respect.

Though utopia may not exist, our society is the closest thing to one. However, with any good story, it must end. In our scenario, this close came suddenly, and violently, a greater, more malevolent force from beyond our understanding and comprehension violently cornering humanity. This force, known as the Yama effect, was something we never could grasp, it was simply too sudden. In a sudden, spontaneous tremor of our entire world, everything would change. Earthquakes, magnetic disturbances, solar flares, it was like a B horror film- everything that could go wrong did. In a comical twist, at least one Sharknado was observed. It was as if the entirety of logic was sucked from our planet.

And then, on one relatively calm Sunday afternoon, the air crisp and clean, at 3:04 PM, October 10th, 2343, humanity was gone. The disasters subsided, and the world was completely devoid of humans- but there were few other changes. Our cities survived, though much worse for wear, but the animals of our world were left with a land free of the humans who had oppressed them for so long.

Hundreds of years passed, and mother nature reclaimed her lost world. Slowly but surely, vines crept in on our cities, creating new ecosystems. As nature returned to urban centers- something incredible happened. Extinct species, all wronged by humanity, began to return. It started small, with subspecies of surviving animals, but sooner or later, animals that we had killed off years ago, like the Lion, Sockeye Salmon, and non-domestic canines began to reappear. Our world was wild and whole once more. But, there was another change. Something that made all the other alterations to our planet by this Yama effect seem tame by relativity.

Magic. A thing long speculated about and dreamed of by many human minds, was born. In our absence, strange new animals began to appear with odd qualities. Orcs, goblins, the stuff of legends. Our world was a whole new landscape, forever changed by this “magic.” If it was real magic, by the principles and rules that we know it, we would not know. But what we did know, is that humanity was gone. At least, for now. The same Yama effect that almost seemed to be an intelligent entity, that decided humanity was unfit for this world, saw fit to give us mercy once more. In an event, truly unfathomable by mortals, humanity appeared on this planet once more. It started as a few at first, with no knowledge of the world that their predecessors left behind. This new generation of humanity was left to the tattered remains of a society they never would know. Soon, they began to re-evolve. They rediscovered agriculture and had become a society based on farming. However, we were failing- it was an unsustainable venture- but then something amazing happened. We rediscovered technology.

These tribes began to creep back into our cities, salvaging the technology we left behind. Weaponry, medicine, and we learned to use them. It was at this time that the magic that had become present on our world began to be made apparent. Slowly but surely, we unlocked the secrets of both worlds- the past technology of a civilization in ruins, and something whimsical and new. We were truly born anew. It is now ten thousand years after the start of our story, in the year known as 4004, as it four thousand four years after the founding of Rhodok. and we are in a period akin to the middle ages. City states dominate, and the end goal of this new humanity is to discover what happened to the ones before and to prosper. There are plagues such as war and hunger, but our species is tough, and with this second chance, they will hopefully not repeat the mistakes of their precursors. You are resident to one of these city-states, the noble kingdom of Rhodok. Now, it is up to you to carve out your life. Be it farmer, peasant, guardsman, mage, or even the surveyors, a group dedicated to the exploration of the old ruins of our species and the uncovering of what happened. Whichever path you may choose, you must be sure of one thing- you’ve been given a second chance. Do not squander it.

    III-Player factions.

Though I think (and hope) I have a fairly solid original lore here, I am aware a lore isn’t enough to sustain a playerbase. As such, I will now go into detail about how I envision gameplay for the average player. I will try to cover everything from player factions to quality of rp, to crafting.

The first topic I would like to speak about is player factions, and this is where I see many communities fail. I intend for there to be 3 Major whitelists that must be applied for, as well as a starting faction. Depending on the amount of hype and the quality of the final product I deliver, this could be more or less. The four main factions I have envisioned are the Countrymen, which is the starting faction. As a countryman, you are a peasant living under the rule of the monarchy of Rhodok. You are not oppressed, but life is not easy at the same time. You are likely to be a farmer, as well as armed lightly to fend off the attacks to the countryside you inhabit. After all, this is a fairly hostile world. I would like to stress that you are unlikely to stay in this faction for very long unless you choose to do so. It is simply a faction designed to ensure you can meet rp standards. You will likely receive one of 3 whitelists quickly.

Next, we have the Regiment, which acts as the military and guards of Rhodok. In this faction, you are charged with upholding the laws of the state, protecting the general populace, and fending off raider parties and other threats. This is a whitelist faction which will be armed, and be seen patrolling. One thing to remember is this roleplay is not oppressive. You are expected to be fair and just in this faction. The third is the House of the Old World, one of the many factions known as houses that have developed in the deep roots of Rhodok. This kingdom is now ancient, and as such, it has deep political roots. The House of the Old World is a guild who works to better the understanding of magic and the old world, and has few dubious ulterior motives, much unlike many of the other houses. The church simply wishes to colonize more of the old world, the crumbling cities of legend.

Finally, we have the Technocrats, an aristocratic house that values decadence above all else. Regarded as cowards, their experiments also try to better the kingdom, and they also try to compete to win the favor of the monarchy. However, their goals are much less noble, with the technocrats wishing to use the monarchy’s favor to extinguish the lower class of Rhodok, leaving only a rich society.

There are many other smaller factions, such as the surveyors, an elite sect of the regiment tasked with the exploration of the old world, as well as smaller houses. Many are invitation only, with no applications. These secondary factions will not be allowed to become special snowflakes and will be heavily policed and a strict rp quality will be enforced.

    IV-Events and Passive RP.

The next topic I wish to speak of is the events I wish to host on this server. This server will have combat events, that is for sure, but I wish for events to focus heavily around passive roleplay. Going into this, I always wanted to tell the story not like a series of isolated events, but like a serial television show with a coherent plot. I also wish to make several themes and principles clear. The events and passive are both going to focus on a newfound appreciation for our gifts, discovering what happened to old humanity, and political subterfuge and the unchanging nature of humanity. Some events will consist of raider parties and savage creatures attempting to ransack Rhodok, others will be famines or similar problems, and others still will surface around the sabotaging of the houses by one another. Finally, there will be events where the players leave the city of Rhodok to explore new locales, mainly the ruins of the old world.

These events will allow players to explore large maps, and locate things. It will be based on player communication and will see players work together to achieve their goals. These events will be largely player lead, with the players given choices. For example, a small squad of Regiment soldiers walks into a building. There is an elevator, but it looks derelict and unlikely to work. They will be able to /me examining several objects in the room and must use the descriptions provided by staff to get the elevator working. We will also make use of the roll system, with rolling working similar to skill checks in more traditional tabletop games, and RPGs such as fallout. An example of this would be if one person, who is skilled at manipulation of technology, were to write out a /me of just fixing the elevator themselves. They roll. If they get above a certain number, they are able to repair it. If not, they are unable, and another consequence is added, such as a security system activating.

Next, I wish to talk about the passive on the server. For the countrymen, passive will consist of farming crops, and generally living life as a fairly low-class citizen. For the regiment, passive rp is patrolling the streets of Rhodok, and keeping them safe. They will also be allowed to passive in the royal court. Finally, the two Houses will have passive rp based heavily on performing research and magical and scientific experiments. This will include things like summoning on the magical side and scientific experiments with machinery and compounds on the scientific side. On a lesser amount, the passive of these groups will also include subterfuge and spying on the other house, as well as performing tasks and generally kissing up to the monarchy. Speaking of monarchy….

    V- The monarchy.

So, I have spoken a lot about this so-called monarchy, but realize I have yet to describe it. Well, due to the perpetual medieval society of Rhodok and the rest of the planet, many states have taken to the use of the monarch system, with Rhodok being no exception. The “king” of Rhodok is known as King Alfred the wise, but the odd thing is that nobody has ever seen or heard him directly- the entirety of his court is taken care of by his royal advisors and guardsmen. Why this is, nobody knows, but something nobody cares to question as his rule is a fair and prosperous one. However, a major part of the plotline will involve the truth about King Alfred, as there is more to him than one might assume.

    VI- Why I’m posting this.

So whether or not you like what I’ve talked about today, it’s obvious I’m posting it for a reason. This is far from a finished product, and I am one person. I frankly do not have the time nor resources to run such an ambitious project on my own. That’s why I turn to you, Cloud Sixteen, to give me criticism, comments, concerns, and more to help refine and improve this idea. Furthermore, I also need capable volunteers who would be willing to make custom assets or even staff members. I am very aware it's nearly impossible to get quality custom assets without a paid commission, but I still stand by the belief that I require early adopters and supporters of this idea. If you are interested in this project, please PM me with any questions you may have. You can also find me on steam here- ://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198074728731/. Thanks for reading my idea, I know it was a long post.

    sparkz FUCK! Clockwork Customer

Although the idea is not half-bad (and we have talked about it), it would very much help to add some pictures and simplified information since people are not as inclined to read a big wall of text. Good luck!

  3. The idea itself sounds interesting, though, many of the famous schema creators either don't code anymore or are occupied. If you want this to be a thing, C16 may not be the place to look. Though I don't speak on behalf of the people on C16, just saying what I've observed. I could likely help with some of the minor stuff in the development, but definitely nothing big.
