For a second I thought this was going to be a literary discussion thread about books, now I'm sad.

  4. Personally, my favorite series of all time has to be The Expanse, if you're interested in an actual amazing book (series). It's a space opera-- realistic, too. The "mechanics" to say the least behind space travel and gravity and such is really well thought out. For example, space travel in general. No "aliens" in the book, just humans in the solar system. There's fusion and "eipstein drives" (very fast/efficient drives), but even with an eipstein drive, it'd still take months to go from earths to a station in the outer ring, etc. There's also a realistic light delay between everything. I could go on for hours on how well fleshed out the series is, but if you want a good read, you should really check it out.

If you don't want to spend money, just download it from Mobilism. (My dad personally bought all of the books except the last one, Book 5. Not gonna post a link to Warez, just google it.)

Not sure whether to be excited or dissapointed that they're making a Syfy TV show out of it-- trailer looks really inaccurate and dumb.

I read Les Miserables my Freshman year of Highschool, and by far it's one of my favorite books. I barley did any reading in my Sophomore year, now that I'm a Junior I'm reading Atlas Shrugged after an old 'edgy anti-government conspiracy tin-foil hat' bud of mine told me it was a good book, while most oppose the writings of Ayn Rand, and calling her a philosopher is a joke; it's a good book. And a big book.

and i wanted to come in here talking about books, but now i'm upset.
stephen king's cujo, pet cemetery, and the shining are all much better in book form. good reads.

  8. I too thought that book was rather good. However, I really also liked a series of different books.

    Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy
    1984
    To Kill A Mockingbird
    Jurassic Park
    Jaws

And so many more. The world of literature is so interesting because of how much can be pulled from a single sample of text.

  9. The Ender's Game book series is also an amazing space opera. Good shit-- unlike the movie.

  10. The Invention of Hugo Cabret is my top favorite and any books written by Brian Selznick.

Though, I gotta hand it to Captain Underpants books, too damn old for me. Sad face.

  11. The Hungry Caterpillar is my favorite book.

A lot of good books out there.
Most of my reading now is political science texts for school (I love my major but goddamn the amount of reading is absurd) or news items (The Economist is my go to news source for "after the action" and great opinion pieces).
My favorite 'fun' fiction is A Song of Ice and Fire, particularly A Clash of Kings if I had to pick one.
My favorite 'thoughtful' fiction at the time of reading was probably Brave New World, or A Separate Peace, but I read both of those years ago now. Nowadays most of my fiction reading is "fun".
Non-fiction reads: The LBJ Years by Robert Caro, any of the political writings that helped form the basis of the US Constitution (Paine, Locke, Hobbes, Montesquieu, Rousseau). Read the books by each of the recent presidents too, both parties.
