The Day I Didn't Recieve a Christmas Gift

    Beep-beep-beep!

    Slowly coming to conscious, I raise a single eyelid to peer across from my bed at my desk, the clock alarm has struck 8 AM.

    I yawn softly whilst I try to drag myself out of my mattress, prepping myself ready.

    Skipped breakfast, brushed my teeth, put on my average clothes of the day.

    On the far corner of my desk lay a flamboyant small package with a ribbon on top. A Christmas gift, not for me of course. Someone special.

    I finish brushing my hair and rush out the door with the package in hand and into my car.

    Vrooooooom! An hour drive later.

    I arrive.

    All the families are here, hugging and giving out gifts all around.

    In the corner of my eye, I saw them.

    With a heavy heart and a warm feeling that makes you want to kiss the person you love.

    I hurry on over and wish them a merry christmas.

    "Merry Christmas!", I said with a gentle smile as I handed them their gift.

    "Merry Christmas to you too!", they said as they smile back.


    My heart skipped a beat...

    "Oh...", they said as they proceeded to pull out a rather large wrapped present from behind them.

    "For me...?" I think to myself as this is the first time someone had given me a gift for the first time.

    "... Could you give this present for your cousin? I'm sorry I couldn't get you any..."

    Dread. Absolute dread I felt, but I silently kept it inside and smile as I nodded in agreement.

    "Thanks!", they said, handing me the gift then ran off to be with their lover.

    A few minutes later

    I sat quietly as I observe the family having a merry time.

    I get up and walked out of the house.

    I find myself a wooden bench and sat down.

    I took out my cheap lighter and a packet of cigarette.

    Lit one, pop one in my mouth.

    Nobody noticed I left.
