HL2RP What do you like AND dislike the most about HL2RP?

Pretty simple question. I know a lot of criticisms regarding HL2RP and thought it'd be interesting to let people express their opinions.
So, what is one thing that you dislike and one thing that you like the most in HL2RP? Please do not bring any specific stories about communities.
    My opinion:
I would say, personally, that what I dislike the most about HL2RP is the way CityRP is traditionally done. I feel like one of the biggest restrictions in CityRP is the fact that there are so many unwritten rules about what you should and should not do. I understand the point is to be oppressed under a totalitarian government, but does anyone really want to be completely blocked from going anywhere but the plaza? I don't think so.
On the flip side, what I do like the most about HL2RP is the fact that there are so many settings you can have for a server. Aside from the traditional CityRP, there is a multitude of other places to be set in. This includes the outlands and canals, which I personally find to be the perfect balance between being an open world based RP and a traditional totalitarian controlled CityRP. There is both the exploration element and the element of being under a constant threat by the Combine. When done well, anyone can enjoy a server set in these places.

  3. While most tend to focus on the quality of roleplay, I have a critical eye for the script HL2RP servers run. I wish there was some sort of system in place for quality control when it comes to owners of HL2RP and the servers they put up with it, because I hate seeing servers running vanilla shit. It's been done before and knocks a potential item off the "what makes us unique" list.

  4. probably random people with nicknames like Ghost or Shadow, really grinds my gear

i hate crappy disambiguations about lore within any canon of a server that is being used

anything around the span of hl2rp to even the odder shit like star wars

a good example of this is with hl2rp are the guesses that people make toward how things are
    - citizens are not malnourished, no where does it imply that the citizens are
    - malnourishment = i cant fight back
    - my stunstick apparently has settings from low to kill, like a star trek phaser
    - the metropolice force wear vastly different uniforms from eachother, and we're not talking basic metrocop and the elite one, im talking having different models for EVERY division dude, its lore to make my GRID unit have the tron police model

stuff like that really gets me. i mean, as a guy who does this kinda stuff with my friends on our own servers, we want to make extensions of lore that sound like they make sense but aren't absolutely stupid. i swear i dont know how many times ive been told that the cop trying to arrest me set his stunstick to high smh, you shake it and then swing it, it isnt that hard to know how to do.

also quality of rp which is a whole 'nother dynamic all on its own. you got everything from mister John "Bloodslice" Johnson to the hl2rp servers who have pac3 for the admins to fiddle around with so they can fashion themselves a sweet OC to match their badass personality

we are talking tnb here guys, custom imports, capes, the whole nine yards. i want my character to be tall, dark, and brooding you know? a badass if you will

with that also comes the cookie-cutter personalities of the servers. every person in hl2rp has had a bad past involving drug use, imprisonment, gang behavior, lack of education, ect, then you got the polar opposite, the doctor types, the smart folk, the over-educated, and these guys do the biggest thing that i hate which is attempt to rp something that is above their level of education. like, ill give a pass to medical rp, you dont really need to be a doctor to have common sense about how to treat someone who is wounded, and i wont expect 1:1 accuracy about imaginary bullet wounds, but honestly i was in this rp with a CWU doctor on this random server where the guy claimed that morphine didn't do what it fucking says on google.

cant think of anymore at this point cus i stopped doing hl2rp a while ago anyways

I've recently had trouble creating characters that fall under their own persona, and I frequently revisit old tropes like overly smart, or a little too uneducated. how do you typically go about creating a character that fits their own shoes?

I suppose the one thing I hate about roleplay is that newer folk who join servers being run by veterans usually criticize several aspects of the server. Like, even the simplest things like the MPF name or a relaxed set of rules gets them in a frit and causes them to question everything. I really wish that the popular servers that are now gone, or not, didn't create a stigma for how servers are ran, so players would have an open mind about everything.

The one thing I do like, though, is the feeling you get when you find that *one* server with that *one* group of players. When you can roleplay with about anyone on the server about anything, and the people aren't afraid to start interaction, it's fun -- and the only other similar feeling I've gotten was on the triple A titles that have roleplay sessions.

character tropes are hard to get around considering making something 'original' is just chore on its own, coupled with the fact that the character you make can easily be killed off, putting effort into something that expendable can be annoying. i can easily understand why someone wouldnt want to do it for even the smallest of reasons like the fact that they probably havent learned to create something that can be developed with some form of depth and longevity.

that being said, it cant be that hard to make something that isnt that hackneyed in RP terms, just take a common character trope and add different twists to places where they wouldnt naturally be, take a character you like from a movie and make your own personal changes to it to fit the setting (as long as it isnt that retarded you should be fine), or just make yourself if you cant do anything (tbh this isnt that hard and it sounds stupid but who knows themselves best other then yourself?).

going with that should be some backstory, outline it in your head, because no one really needs to make a term paper on their character and how they are they way they are. it is like acting to fit the role, instead of trying to build it as you go from the ground up, create the character go and play the role for it to be developed after. most people just make the char and gun it, which is how you get the stupid edge rebels and the male_07 "c-combine killed my family!" types

That being said, acting fear is hard for trained actors/actresses. I try to cut people slack, I don't FearRP well myself.

FearRP is just an excuse for Combine players to be invulnerable.

Lost count of how many servers I successfully pulled off a really well planned mugging that went completely to book, only to be told "Well uh, did you fear RP?"

What? I have the fucking gun.

    right?

like, it's not my fault the cops or overwatch units on your server are clueless and easy as fuck to gun down. shouldn't hide their lack of skill behind some thin veil of "fearrp". maybe you should get better cops? idk

  11. i dont like how everything is bounded by lore
you cant do this and that because x states so in the lore
and if you break lore then that's failrp and you get banned

this is why hl2rp is garbage because of all the fun and enticing shit is locked away behind muh srsrp

Whenever a lack of objective in a server is questioned, you're suggested to do passive.
I understand that HL2RP isn't exactly supposed to be this dramatic, live action movie where the story progresses in the span of 30 minutes, but I feel like there needs to be some sort of objective when you're in the city. Escape was one of the biggest things I revolved roleplay around and it made it fairly fun, provided I was challenged along the way and it wasn't as simple as climbing a fence and running off into an alleyway of City 18. I think it's important to create a storyline for your server and move along with it--hell, even make an ending when you want things to come to a close or you want to change things up.
Everyone is so amiable and neutral in HL2RP towards units instead of their fellow men...no resistance, no sense of fear, no sense of doubt. Complete trust in the units. I absolutely hate the loyalist system's level of identification and rewards because it should be just someone getting the shit kicked out of them regardless even if they provided information to Civil Protection. No armbands and tiers, and begging for work to get virtual points.

Most "lore" HL2RP servers come up with doesn't have any examples at all from the game. Whether it be physical or verbal.

    Examples:
    -Biolocked weapons
    -Malnourishment
    -English as the "official" language
    -Augments

    Bro, calm down. Lol

Edit: Half kidding. I understand where you're coming from. Most people playing Russians dont do it right.

  17. it just gets to you man
everywhere you look its just fucking russia
even the fucking mpf are russian

  18. That's a good point. Why does everyone have a hard on for russian characters? The closest I've come to having one was a Belarusian woman I played on synergy back in 2014. Never again.

  19. you're wrong though because the universal union constantly transfer people all the time at random intervals
just because the city is in russia/ukraine doesn't mean the people there are going to majority russian/ukranian
but instead a clump of numerous ethnicities/nationalities

all the russian characters are hilariously horrible as well, all the spastics play them

I usually play an ethnic Russian from Donetsk, Ukraine or a Russian from Chelyabinsk. It's about quality and not being a walking stereotype.

There are cultural differences, but making it ridiculous is what ruins it.

And tbh, I've seen more English or Half-Japanese lesbians than Russians. I state this absolute confidence.
