HL2RP What would be your ideal HL2RP Server?

Discussion in 'Discussion' started by Humblebumbled, Feb 1, 2016.

  1. I helped run an HL2RP server that was strictly focused around the citizen roleplay. It thrived while it was up, but it was taken down because of certain reasons very shortly after its release.

e: essentially if you can pull off something which makes it at least partially interesting for civilians, that's cool.

  2. No transhuman arm in the city, it's absolutely fucking retarded.

The overwatch can have somewhere else much more important to be rather than sit around in the nexus all day doing who knows what - In game, the Civil Protection were able to successfully contain the City, Canals and Sewers(until Gordon Freeman came along).

They key to success is having a competent Civil Protection that knows what they're doing.

  3. On a roleplay standpoint, I couldn't agree more. If anything, they should only be present in a rather rare event such as open rebellion in the streets. However I'd imagine the Combine would not rely on CPs for the nexus security, and would at least have a small garrison of soldiers there. Though they probably wouldn't get involved with citizens (not even exist as player characters either, unless certain circumstances arise) as protection units can handle most possible scenarios, unless you got a Resistance with military-grade weaponry and other bullshit of that type.

Edit: Speaking about CPs, they shouldn't focus on firearms tbh. Just use the stun-baton more often than the pistol (likely locked for starting CPs) and probably few to no uses of the SMG (likely not even issued unless something goes down); most people they deal with are unarmed civilians. However that'd depend on the rebels also being balanced and not turning into a weapon script monopoly that'd force CPs to get more guns and devolve into a script culture.

  4. I'm going off like 'normal/average' hl2rp where the resistance is just a bunch of people with lead pipes or w/e assisting one and other

Also yeah, I don't mind having one or two on standby just in case but their presence in the city shouldn't be open to every citizen where they can point and go "oh hey look its the elite combine soldiers" as is norm in hl2rp now

i was on a server and i shot a cp once and like 2 EOW kings came on
anyway a heavy focus on citizen rp as most of the time citizens either
    1. minge.
    2. rebel
    3. ask "whn do ic apps hawppen"
a way to combat this from happening would make me come on that server more often, aswell as the server putting in new content or "updates" i guess you could call it

  6. 1 ~ A vague universal union/combine, in most hl2rp servers the combine become way too predictable "ahh we'll just send in another 5-10 mpf members yknow raid it whatever", "send in the ota squad pfft..too easy". While it temporarily solves the issue at hand, it only creates more problems in the future then solves - The combine then become predictable to all the players on the server, they'll know that a squad of mpf will walk over and [most likely] fail. I like to draw my points back to the game it self, in earlier chapters because that's where the unpredictability of the combine come into play. During the canals, you'd just expect more mpf to come running down the side but instead a Hunter Chopper is unveiled and remains a problem for the remainder of the chapter - This is never seen in [most] hl2rp servers and it's a quite shame considering the vast amount of technology the combine possesses but it's never but to proper use.

Random inspections and raids should also be something included, as it'll keep citizens on edge and possibly lower the chances of illegal items being smuggled and farmed in the apartments. No proper judicial system or government in the combine so why the fuck should a reason to set in place for doing the act.

2 ~ Remove the ranking system and division set up. It isn't need, divisions are only exist purely to give the mpf something to do in terms of roleplay but otherwise, it contradicts it self. Why would the combine give a citizen plans to a APC, Scanner as well with the tools and knowledge to construct one if needed - Let's say he goes rogue, well, now a single citizen knows how to use combine street technology to his advantage. In the nexus, there's armor repair stations and healing stations which should mend a majority of wounds(based off of klieners assumption).

A ranking system only creates a corrupt, dysfunctional Civil Protection unit that will constantly bicker over who's in charge. Instead, the 'leader' of the Civil Protection should be laid on the Administrator or Dispatch(preferably dispatch) as it seems as if after dispatch announces something the OTA/CP tend to follow in wake. You could argue that "well durr theyd do w/e you dumbass!!". You could argue that but, that's how the Civil Protection are supposed to be, the only thing watching them in earlier chapters are each other and cameras setup throughout City 17 - I'm assuming which is why they constantly push Citizens, make them do useless chores just to get past a checkpoint, etc.

  7. Not much to say about that. I agree, although I don't think they should be pulling everything in the Combine's inventory of deathly inventions at every opportunity.

I'm not very sure about healing stations/recharging stations since they're a game mechanic, and most people assume that CPs simply wear soft bulletproof vests like typical police departments, which would probably be safer since people might think a PCV turns them into a tank. I don't mind people using medkits/vials primarily to treat wounds; in fact I think it's pretty good for those who aren't medrp junkies, and I generally approve of it being a fix-everything substance though it shouldn't be as instant as in the game; or it could be, not sure.

I think protection units shouldn't have some sort of internal ranking per se; I think it shouldn't have any sort of organization so they may be flexible with different timezones and stuff, and have some appointed 'rank leaders' to basically act as field commanders to assist the Overwatch Voice, though regular units could create their own protection teams given each situation. I imagine they have ranks and divisions because CPs can't think of other stuff to roleplay otherwise. I've always seen it like this: Overwatch Voice acts as the chief of police within the map, while the administrator acts as the mayor within the map. That'd probably be the sort of relationship they'd have; I never liked CPs being equal or higher than government officials.

Edit: I don't think there's anything wrong with corruption, though the problem with it in HL2rp (or maybe GMod in general) is that people tend to take it OOC even though it's supposed to only be IC.

I've been thinking, is it just me or are people way too dependent on server staff members to feed them their roleplay? I mean, instead of putting an effort to roleplay something, anything, they just walk around the plaza waiting for someone to happen so they may react to it. This is probably why we need extra mechanics in citizen rp (like work, etc) or such thing as CP specialty divisions; people aren't very creative when they play and expect admins to do most for them with an event. Not that it's not understandable, but I'm just entertaining the idea. I think a good atmosphere should be everything that's needed, and effort put into each person's playthrough, to get something out of a server.

Small events. I did a zombie event when I first launched my RP side of my community and the users loved it. We had only like 2 people at the start and ended with 20. We were just spawning Zombie NPC's. CP's and Citizen's joined up to fight the zombies. But, overall... Events! But make sure all players get a bit of the action and don't get excluded from the gameplay. I see it way too much on big servers, and it really bothers me.
